40 percent of youths attempting suicide make first attempt before high school

Monday, November 28, 2011

Thoughts about killing oneself and engaging in suicidal behavior may begin much younger than previously thought. While about one of nine youths attempt suicide by the time they graduate from high school, new findings reveal that a significant proportion make their first suicide attempt in elementary or middle school.

In a study published in the November issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health, nearly 40 percent of young adults who said they had tried suicide said that they made their first attempt before entering high school.

The researchers also found that suicide attempts during childhood and adolescence were linked to higher scores of depression at the time of the attempts, validating for the first time that young adults can reliably recall when they first attempted suicide.

"Young adults who end up having chronic mental health problems show their struggles early," said James Mazza, lead author and professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington. "This study suggests that implementation of mental health programs may need to start in elementary and middle schools, and that youth in these grades are fairly good reporters of their own mental health."

Adolescence can often be a struggle for some youth with ongoing pressures of drugs, alcohol, sexual relationships and sexual orientation. At the same time, they're becoming more autonomous.

"Adolescence is a time when kids are preparing to be more independent from their parents or guardians, but lack the experience of how to do this," said Mazza, a school psychologist. "And their support network ? their friends ? doesn't have the experience either, especially in crisis situations."

As part of an ongoing survey, Mazza and his collaborators asked 883 young adults aged 18 or 19 about their history of suicide attempts. Seventy-eight respondents, nearly 9 percent, said that they had tried suicide at some point.

Suicide attempt rates showed a sharp increase around sixth grade, about age 12, with rates peaking around eighth or ninth grade. For the 39 respondents reporting multiple suicide attempts, their first attempt was significantly earlier ? as young as 9 ? than those making a single attempt.

Mazza compared the young adults' recollection of their suicide attempts with their past depression scores, which were collected yearly as part of their participation in the Raising Healthy Children project led by researchers at UW's Social Developmental Research Group at the School of Social Work.

Depression levels were higher at the time of the youths' reported first suicide attempts compared with their peers who had not attempted suicide. And Mazza found an increase in depression scores at the time of the attempt compared with depression scores the year before and after the attempt for the same child.

"This suggests that kids are able to tell us, by their depression scores, that things aren't going well for them," Mazza said. "We're likely not giving kids enough credence in assessing their own mental health, and this study shows that we can rely on self-report measures to help identify youth who may be at risk for current mental health concerns, including possible suicidal behavior."

Mourinho: Discipline behind Madrid's unbeaten run

By PAUL LOGOTHETIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:11 p.m. ET Nov. 26, 2011

MADRID (AP) -A provocative character himself, Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho praised the Spanish leader's patience and discipline as the keys to the best winning run of his career after the team's 13th straight victory in all competitions.

But the Portuguese coach didn't deny his team won ugly on Saturday, Madrid rallying to beat nine-man Atletico Madrid 4-1 in a fractious match for its ninth straight league victory.

That took Madrid six points clear after Barcelona lost 1-0 at Getafe for its first defeat this season. The team has never had such a sizeable lead over its main rival since Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola took charge in 2008.

Mourinho may have won two European Cups and domestic league and cup trophies during stints at FC Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan, but he has never won so many consecutive games. Four of Madrid's five victories in the Champions League group stage count toward the streak.

"We have played very well, we have always played with motivation," Mourinho said from Santiago Bernabeu stadium. "We showed emotional control throughout, like tonight, and patience. The team knows that while we can play aggressively, we must also show patience."

Keeping cool was particularly necessary in a match in which five Atletico players were booked besides the two straight red cards, to goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and defender Diego Godin, either side of the break.

"We didn't want to play an ugly, tough game. But we played and we won," the 48-year-old Mourinho said. "I would have liked it if we had played a nicer game, because if I'm a spectator and I paid I would have liked that more, but that's the way it is."

Mourinho has often been criticized for defensive tactics, but Madrid scored another four goals to take its season tally to 46 from 13 games. Madrid's seventh straight win over Atletico pushed its 12-year unbeaten run against its city neighbor to 22 games.

Much of Spain is transfixed on Madrid's winning run and whether it will still be going by the time of the Dec. 10 clasico match against defending champion Barcelona at the Bernabeu.

"A draw or loss will come," Mourinho said. "But the important thing is that in these 13 games we've played well."

Drew Ryniewicz Makes Like Demi Lovato

Note to L.A. Reid: the song "Skyscraper" was written and originally performed by Demi Lovato. She's 19 years old. What would you like Drew Ryniewicz to cover, a track from Sesame Street?

Following this 15-year old's emotional performance last night, Reid contrived an argument with Simon Cowell by somehow claiming he continues to select singles for his pupil that are not age-appropriate. Why are you doing songs for old people? he asked in one of the more insane assessments of the season.

Simon responded that his fellow panelist was coming up with "stupid, pointless criticism" and he's right, but there's also little doubt he encouraged this outburst beforehand. Can the judges please stop making this show about them?

Take it away, Drew...

Chrome Getting Native Gamepad, Webcam, And WebRTC Support In Early 2012

padchromeIt's not always easy to tell when Chrome has been updated, and at any rate the changes aren't always significant enough to even wonder about it. But a pair of features worth caring about are user-bound come early 2012, according to Google developer advocate Paul Kinlan, who spoke recently at the Develop conference in Liverpool. The conference is focused on game development, so it's no surprise that the features are also game-centric. First, there will be plug-and-play gamepad, webcam, and microphone support in Chrome, and second, the nascent real time communication protocol WebRTC will begin to be implemented as well. This opens the door for seamless video chat and conceivably OnLive-like gaming services.

Wesley Snipes' legal woes continue: American Express sues for $30 ...

wesley-snipes-gi.jpgThe fact that he's already serving a three-year prison sentence on a Federal tax evasion conviction doesn't mean Wesley Snipes is immune from new lawsuits.

According to TMZ, Snipes is the target of a new lawsuit filed by American Express. The company claims the "Blade" actor never paid a nearly $30,000 credit card bill before going to prison. The company is suing not only for the unpaid bill, but their legal expenses.

Back in September, Snipes' latest attempt to overturn his 2008 conviction was denied by an Atlanta Federal appeals court judge. So, for the time being he'll be paying -- or disputing -- any American Express charges from Pennsylvania's McKean Federal Correctional Institution.

Gul says Turkey can be EU's "growth engine" (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Turkey is still determined to join the European Union despite the current crisis in the euro zone and can become the bloc's economic "growth engine," President Abdullah Gul said in an interview published on Sunday.

Gul rejected concerns that the economic problems facing the euro zone meant that any further expansion of the 27-member EU should be put on hold.

EU countries agreed unanimously in 2005 to start talks with mainly Muslim Turkey with the goal of full membership.

However, French President Nicolas Sarkozy remains opposed to Turkey joining and German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she favors a "privileged partnership" for Turkey rather than full membership.

"Some people who think in a narrow scope and who do lack a strategic perspective consider Turkey's membership a burden," Gul, who is traveling to Britain this week for a three-day visit, told Britain's Sunday Telegraph.

"But those who can think 30 years, 60 years ahead, and who can think about the changing trends in the economy and the changing centers of power, can understand how much strength Turkey can bring to the existing strength of Europe."

Gul said Turkey's membership of NATO had been considered the only reason for it to be allowed to join but now its booming economy, where GDP grew by 11 percent in the first quarter of 2011, was as valid.

"Consider the potential that Turkey has: Turkey's position, her assets, the value she can add in terms of energy resources, her population, the dynamism she can bring into Europe, and also the growth that she can bring, with Turkey being the engine of this growth."

He said Turkey viewed the euro zone crisis as a temporary situation.

"We approach the negotiations with a strategic vision, and are very determined."

Turkey has also been taking a tough approach against Syria over its crackdown on opponents of President Bashar al-Assad and Gul said his country would back the Syrian people.

"When any kind of movement has its roots among the people of the country and the walls of fear come down, then the end result is very obvious," he said.

"With a strong and clear voice we are saying that the legitimate demands of the people are being supported by us. We enable them to have their meetings and discussions in a free environment, and provide a diplomatic platform.

"I strongly believe that there is no place any more for authoritarian regimes -- single party systems that do not have accountability or transparency -- on the shores of the Mediterranean."

Miranda Serna: Oklahoma State assistant coach remembered as star who gave back to New Mexico

A New Mexico native is one of two Oklahoma State women's basketball coaches killed in a crash.

Miranda Serna's death is being felt in her native town in Mora County.

Serna's mother and sister live in Guadalupita, her mother is a retired teacher and Serna's sister is a teacher at Mora Elementary, but they did not want to comment.

Serna was a shining star that continued to give back to her community.

Serna was number 34 in 1992 when she played for the Eldorado High School girl?s basketball team.

In two seasons, she led Eldorado to a perfect 46-0 record and a state championship.

That was just the beginning of Serna's bright future.

For the past seven seasons Serna was an Oklahoma State University assistant coach.

She and head coach Kurt Budke died Thursday in a plane crash over central Arkansas.

The two were on a recruiting trip.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 talked to Mora County School District Superintendent Thomas Garcia, who spoke with Serna's family Friday.

?It?s obviously difficult for the family,? he said.

OSU President Burns Hargis said at a press conference Friday that university is grieving.

"It's our worst nightmare. The entire OSU family is very close, close indeed, and to lose anyone and especially these two individuals who were incredible life forces,? he said.

Serna and Budke had a long-standing working relationship.

She played at Trinity Valley in Texas under Budke as head coach, where he led the team to seven national titles.

Serna was part of the 1996 national championship team.

Before they moved to Oklahoma State University, Serna served as an assistant coach under Budke at Louisiana Tech.

But Serna never forgot New Mexico.

Over the years Serna would return home and work with youth summer camps.

Now the community is mourning her death.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family as well as Oklahoma State for this tremendous loss," said Garcia.

Former Oklahoma state senator Olin Branstetter and his wife also died in the crash.

This is the second fatal plane crash for the OSU basketball program.

Eleven years ago several people associated with the university's men's basketball program died in a plane crash.

Ari Hart: Prison Reform: An American Spiritual Crisis

"Welcome to the Waldorf Astoria," said the jail guard as he showed me the room I would sleep in, my prison issue bedding (top sheet, bottom sheet, two pillowcases, no pillow) and the vacuum-packed kosher meals that had been prepared for me. This was the beginning of the three days of this High Holy Day season that I would spend on Rikers Island, New York City's jail complex located in the East River. Here, where some 14,000 inmates await their trials, I prayed, ate and slept over during Rosh Hashanah and Shabbat as the rabbi of a community of 60 or so Jewish inmates.

The descent into one of the darker places in our society initially filled me with fear and anxiety. What kinds of religious messages would resonate inside jail? How could I provide spiritual care and inspiration to prisoners?

"Rabbi!" one of the inmates called out to me after services on the first day. "If God is good, and God does everything for a reason, why am I here?"

While I was focused on the spiritual questions of the inmates before me like this one, I could not help but think about the broader systemic issues that are at play in the American prison system. America maintains one of the highest incarceration rates in the world : overshadowing such countries as Russia, Iran and Rwanda. Congress is currently considering legislation to support prison reform. More than 40 Orthodox rabbis have signed on a petition drafted by Uri L'Tzedek: Orthodox Social Justice supporting changes in our criminal justice system. Reform is desperately needed.

Tax payers collectively pay $60 billion annually -- the fastest-growing general fund expenditure in the United States right below Medicaid. The cost, both monetarily and socially, of prisons is growing exponentially, with contributing defects at every stage of the criminal justice system: draconian penalties on petty offenders, inadequate assistance of counsel, overcrowded prisons, failed rehabilitative programming, and underfunded re-entry programs.

Our incarceration system is not just failing the people behind bars or even those at risk, but it is failing the American people, our community and our society. Proper prison conditions, rehabilitation, and re-entry support, including funding vocational programs, increasing transitional living, and restoring voting rights, will benefit prisoners and the American public.

Our prison system is broken. We need to fix it.

The Jewish tradition has many insights to offer about the problem of prisons. Two spiritual teachings that are profoundly relevant to this issue:

Anyone can change.

We had many conversations over the holiday about teshuvah, the Jewish concept of making amends with others and returning to a better self and to God. I shared a teaching of one of the great talmudic rabbis, Resh Lakish, who himself was formerly a notorious thief and gladiator. He taught "great is teshuvah for sins done on purpose are converted to good deeds." Theology, moral insights, introspection, Jewish wisdom and even a sense of humor flowed in these conversations. The soul knows no chains, and even in the depths of Rikers Island folks were hoping, praying and working on changing themselves for the better. I realized that if they can do it, any of us can. But is our prison system doing what it can to foster this transformation? Or is just creating a revolving door system that shuttles people back and forth from the streets to jail?

Another lesson: The image of God is in all of us.

Many of the folks I met had made terrible choices that hurt other people deeply. Yet the Torah teaches that all people are created in the image of God and must be treated with dignity, that even sinners and criminals have inalienable rights. The Prophets demand that we act as advocates for the vulnerable -- those locked away and silenced in dark places. Yet it was incredibly difficult to separate the crimes allegedly committed by these inmates from the inmates themselves. Does our society recognize the innate human dignity of all people, including those locked behind bars?

There are points of hope. To create change within the prison system, Senator Jim Webb of Virginia has recently introduced the National Criminal Justice Commission Act of 2011 (N.C.J.A.), an exceptional initiative, which Jews should support. This bill will create a bipartisan commission to study the United States criminal justice system and offer concrete recommendations to combat its imbalances and injustices. This bill has already attracted broad support, from over 150 civil rights, criminal justice, community and faith-based organizations, as well as the National Sheriff's Association, National Fraternal Order of Police, International Association of Chiefs of Police, National Narcotics Officers' Associations' Coalition and International Union of Police Associations. This is an encouraging step.

On the final day of Rosh Hashanah, we concluded the service by blowing the shofar. It was then time for the inmates to begin their holiday meal, one of the few they could enjoy eating outside the chaos of the mess hall. But many of them lingered, asking me to blow the shofar more, to complete the religiously required 100 blasts.

So we gathered together, and I blew with everything I had -- 50, 60, 70, 80 blasts, until we reached 100. I sounded those broken shofar notes for their sake, for the sake of their victims, for all of us crying out for a better reality. As we enter this tumultuous 5772, I pray each of us finds the strength to break free from whatever chains hold us back from our potential to return to God, and at the same time do everything we ensure that our society is doing everything it can to help everyone, no matter what corner office or dark dungeon they occupy, do the same.

Singer Stevie B in Mass. court over child support (AP)

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ? A Massachusetts judge has given singer Stevie B more time to dispute $400,000 in child support the state says he owes.

The singer, whose full name is Steven Bernard Hill, is best known for the 1990 hit "Because I Love You (The Postman Song)." He was arrested Sept. 30 after performing at the MassMutual Center in Springfield.

Hill appeared in court Friday. His attorney, Justin Nadeau, says they have until Jan. 17 to seek documents from the state. The hearing is continued until Feb. 23.

Hill told The Associated Press afterward it's "a very positive victory."

He disputes the amount that an Agawam (AG'-ah-wahm) woman claims he owes in support of their two daughters. He said earlier he's always been "a loyal, loving father." Hill lives in Las Vegas.

Spain prepares for general elections (AP)

MADRID ? More than 34 million Spanish voters are gearing up for general elections likely to oust the Socialists in favor of the conservative Popular Party by observing a day of reflection free of electioneering events.

A gathering planned by "indignant" protesters angry at austerity measures, high unemployment and politicians they consider inept attracted few participants at Madrid's downtown Puerta del Sol on Saturday.

Voting to elect 350 members of Parliament and 208 senators begins 9 a.m. (0800 GMT) Sunday.

A near two-year recession has burdened the country with a euro-zone high 21.5 percent unemployment rate and a budget deficit.

Spain's key borrowing rate rose above 6 percent for five day running this week, just 1 percent below a rate considered unsustainable.

Green bean casserole

A classic Thanksgiving dish invented by Campbell's Soup in 1955 freed women everywhere.

Every Thanksgiving I brace myself for the inevitable: green bean casserole.

Skip to next paragraph Kendra Nordin

Kendra Nordin thinks cooking and sharing a meal is an act of creativity that everyone should do every single day. Light some candles, set fresh flowers on the table, and sit down to enjoy a meal with friends ? this stuff feeds the soul. She is also a staff editor for The Christian Science Monitor and produces Stir It Up!

Recent posts

Green bean casserole, invented by Campbell's Soup in 1955, is adored by literally millions of Americans. I am not in this group. Our family, lead by mother's disdain for opening a can of creamed mushroom soup and dumping it on vegetables, ate peas and pearl onions instead.

Usually I allow myself an air of historic superiority as I dismiss green bean casserole when it is offered ? surely the original Thanksgiving did not include a dish from a can.

But this year I may soften my stance a bit. I've been reading an informative and insightful cookbook, "Giving Thanks: Thanksgiving Recipes and History, from Pilgrims to Pumpkin Pie" by Kathleen Curtin, Sandra L. Oliver, and Plimoth Plantation.

You are probably well aware that no one knows for certain what was exactly shared and consumed at that first day of thanksgiving in 1621 sometime between Sept. 21 and Nov. 9 among the native Wampanoag People of Cape Cod and the settling English. The only eye-witness account of that day, written by colonist Edward Wilson to a friend back home refers to "fowl" and "deer." And it wasn't even really Thanksgiving. It was an annual harvest party.

The authors of "Giving Thanks" go on to explain how this harvest party evolved into the full-blown American tradition it is today. It is a fascinating read and will arm you with plenty of trivia to impress your friends and relatives around the dinner table, too stuffed to escape your self-indulgent soliloquy of facts they could care less about.

For instance, Abraham Lincoln may have declared the last Thursday of November as the annual date for our national holiday, but did you know this was largely because of the hard campaigning of the "Godey's Lady's Book" editor, Sarah Josepha Buell Hale? Ms. Hale was relentless in her pursuit to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday and annually wrote letters for 16 years to the White House, all state governors, and each member of Congress extolling the virtues of a meal that brought people together to express gratitude. When Lincoln finally relented with his proclamation in 1863, Southerners refused to acknowledge the "Yankee" holiday.

But the Southerners eventually changed and perhaps I will, too, about green bean casserole. Here's why: At the back of "Giving Thanks" is an incredibly eclectic array of "traditional" Thanksgiving dishes. There is everything from "Oyster Stuffing" to "Chinese American Rice Dressing" to "Finnish Turnip Casserole" to "Puerto Rican Roast Pork Shoulder." And there is even a recipe for "Green Bean Casserole."

Thanksgiving dishes have evolved and mixed and borrowed just like the unique peoples who have come together and adapted in their efforts to build a free democracy.

So, if a glob of canned soup in a Thanksgiving dish is really a nod to the convenient foods that temporarily freed mid-20th century American women everywhere so they could devote their thoughts and energies beyond the kitchen ? for better or worse ? then I concede. Green bean casserole has its proper place in the history of American Thanksgiving.

But I'll need to change the recipe's name ? just to satisfy my preference for historical context. Please pass me the peas and pearl onions.

Feminist Green Bean Casserole
Adapted from "Giving Thanks"

Serves 8

1 10-3/4-ounce can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 16-ounce cans French-cut green beans, drained or 2 16-ounce packages frozen French-cut green beans, cooked and drained
1 2.8-ounce can French's Fried Onions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a medium bowl, whisk the condensed soup, milk, soy sauce, and pepper until smooth. Stir in the beans and half of the onions.

Pour mixture into a 1-1/2 quart casserole dish. Bake for 25 minutes, uncovered until the mixture is hot and bubbling.

Stir well, top with the remaining onions, and bake for 5 minutes more, or until the onion topping is nicely browned.

Researchers crown new lightweight champion

Dan Little / HRL Laboratories

A new type of nickel-phosphorus lattice is so light it can sit atop a ball of dandelion fluff without disturbing it.

Alan Boyle writes

Researchers have created a new kind of metal that rates as the world's lightest material ? and just might show up in future batteries and shock absorbers.

The nickel-phosphorus "microlattice," which is described in this week's issue of the journal Science, is the stuff that gee-whiz is made of: It's actually consists of 99.99 percent air. The other 0.01 percent is made up of interconnected hollow tubes with a wall thickness of 100 nanometers. That's 1,000 times thinner than a human hair.

To get technical about it, the density of the material is?0.9 milligrams per cubic centimeter. In comparison, the lightest sample of aerogel, the stuff that's been called "solid smoke," has a density of 1.1 mg/cc.

The microlattice is made through a process that's completely different from the "cooking" technique that gives rise to aerogel. The researchers start by setting up a matrix of polymer lattices, and then deposit thin films of nickel-phosphorus. When the polymer is etched away, tiny metal tubes are left behind in the shape of the lattice.

Aerogel is foamy stuff that makes a great insulator but chips off easily. In contrast, the highly ordered structure of the microlattice makes it strong and resilient.

"Modern buildings, exemplified by the Eiffel Tower or the Golden Gate Bridge, are incredibly light and weight-efficient by virtue of their architecture," William Carter, manager of the architected materials group at California-based HRL Laboratories, explained today in a news release. "We are revolutionizing lightweight materials by bringing this concept to the nano and micro scales."

Lorenzo Valdevit, a materials scientist at the University of California at Irvine, said materials actually get stronger when the scale is reduced to the nanometer level. "Combine this with the possibility of tailoring the architecture of the microlattice, and you have a unique cellular material," he said in a UC-Irvine news release.

The material is strong enough to bounce back after being compressed by 50 percent, yet light enough to sit on top of a fluffy dandelion without disturbing it, as shown in the photo above. The stuff's properties make it ideal for applications that involve soundproofing or shock absorption, and it could also lead to lighter battery electrodes. It's no wonder that the material was developed for the?Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. (And yes, the developers have applied for a patent on the microlattice structure and formation process.)

Khaldun Bshara has dodged bullets to preserve Palestinians' heritage (The Christian Science Monitor)

Ramallah, West Bank ? Most visitors to the Palestinian architectural company RIWAQ would be forgiven for thinking that its building and people are similar to others in the area.

With its Arabesque entryway, high ceilings, and tiled floor, the stone structure that houses the firm is a standard Ottoman design common across the region. And the people, busily working behind desks, appear to be like any other office employees.

But RIWAQ, which means "gallery" in Arabic, is more than just an architectural firm: It's a thriving center for architectural conservation. Today, as the dream of an independent Palestinian state grows more realistic, the organization's work in preserving Palestinian cultural heritage has taken on added significance.

RELATED: Palestinian statehood: why Arabs have turned on Obama

RIWAQ director Khaldun Bshara excitedly points to the intricate details of the long-term renovation that has given this once-run-down 80-year-old former family home a new purpose. Most recently, it served as a strategic frontline base between fighting Palestinians and Israelis.

Standing in the lush garden with its vibrant bougainvillea and mix of indigenous plants, Mr. Bshara recalls how just over a decade ago he would have to keep away from the arched windows as bullets fired by Israeli soldiers and stones from Palestinian protesters flew past.

"We were right on the firing line during the second intifada," recalls the silver-haired architect, who started working for RIWAQ just before that Palestinian uprising began in 2000.

Bshara has gone on to dedicate his life to renovating such buildings and, in the process, has kick-started the efforts at heritage-building that lie at the heart of any viable national identity.

"I don't think that the declaration of [a Palestinian] state will have a huge impact on our work, but as we move in that direction, it will certainly bring more attention to the importance of heritage," says Bshara, referring to the Palestinian leadership's attempt to seek international recognition of a Palestinian state at the United Nations. "Our work will continue on, regardless of whether there is a state or not."

Founded in 1991 by architect Suad Amiry, together with a group of Palestinians concerned that their historical sites were disappearing, RIWAQ has spent the past two decades rebuilding and reviving villages damaged by the constant state of conflict in the area.

Aside from its impressive data-collection operation aimed at identifying all buildings of significance to Palestinian history, RIWAQ has gained financial support from a wide range of local and international sources, which has allowed it to improve people's lives by rejuvenating their surroundings.

"One of our goals is to connect the disconnected villages spread out all over the West Bank," says Bshara, describing one recent project in which a team of architects and experts cleared, renovated, and even added a contemporary structure to a local music conservatory. "We could sense how the renovations had a huge impact on how the kids behaved and even found meaning to their existence in terms of music and openness," he says.

"RIWAQ helped by giving us a place to hold our activities," says Fatimah Issa, director of the nonprofit organization Women for Life. "They let us hold on to our past while helping us for the future."

She adds: "Their work is unique because it makes us feel thankful that we have a country. It makes our country real."

While RIWAQ's projects are largely chosen based on their architectural importance and history, Bshara concedes those are not the only criteria. "We also look at how the project will help the community, and we also consider the place's proximity to [Israeli] settlements and the [Israeli security barrier] wall," he says.

"We are doing something very political while we are doing apolitical stuff. We believe that these buildings and cultural sites are the only physical [artifacts] that are left for us to use as an identity symbol, and we see our work as a central element to creating a national identity of Palestine."

"RIWAQ is a very strong institution in our community as it focuses on the rehabilitation of Palestinian heritage both in terms of the people and the buildings they use," says Palestinian Culture Minister Siham Barghothi.

While work such as fixing up a community center has practical value, it is also "vital because renovating these buildings keeps our history alive," Ms. Issa says.

Bshara, born and raised in the village of Tubas near Nablus, says his dedication to Palestinian cultural heritage stems from a sense of social responsibility. "I believe that everyone has to give back to the community that helped him to flourish," he says, citing his mother as the inspiration for this desire to help other people in this way.

RIWAQ is mainly funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, along with other foundations such as the European Union's EUROMED Heritage program, several Arab organizations, and wealthy individuals.

Steelers hold on for 24-17 win over Bengals (AP)

CINCINNATI ? Rashard Mendenhall ran for a pair of touchdowns Sunday, and the Pittsburgh Steelers intercepted rookie Andy Dalton twice in the fourth quarter, holding on for a 24-17 victory over the upstart Cincinnati Bengals.

Pittsburgh (7-3) got a needed win by putting together long, balanced drives while thousands of Steelers fans waved Terrible Towels in the first sellout crowd of the season at Paul Brown Stadium.

Dalton handled most of what Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau threw at him. He had two more touchdown passes, giving him 14 overall ? the most by a rookie quarterback in his first nine games since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.

At the end, a Steelers defense that's finally getting healthy and forcing turnovers got to him.

Pittsburgh came in with only two interceptions all season. Cornerback William Gay anticipated Dalton's throw and stepped in front of Jerome Simpson for a clinching interception inside the Pittsburgh 20-yard line with 2:27 left.

Griner 22 points, No. 1 Baylor beats Howard 82-28 (AP)

WACO, Texas ? Brittney Griner had 22 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocked shots as Baylor easily won its first season opener as the No. 1 team, 82-28, over Howard in a preseason WNIT game Friday night.

The Lady Bears scored the game's first 28 points, nine by Griner, the 6-foot-8 phenon who was a unanimous preseason AP All-America selection to start her junior season.

Odyssey Sims added 15 points and four assists.

About the only thing missing for Griner was a dunk, and it appeared that she passed up a chance for the sixth of her college career in the first half. Griner was open underneath the basket and took a step before laying the ball in for a 32-5 lead.

One game into her junior season, Griner has 401 career blocks, only 45 shy of matching the Big 12 record held by Oklahoma's Courtney Paris. Griner was 10-of-13 shooting and played only 26 minutes for her 27th double-double in 73 career games.

The opener was career victory No. 299 for Baylor coach Kim Mulkey, who is in her 12th season at Baylor. The Lady Bears had never won a Big 12 title and were coming off a seven-win season when she arrived.

During pregame, the Lady Bears unveiled three more banners in the rafters ? one each for their Big 12 regular season championship, Big 12 tournament title and making it to another NCAA regional final.

Then before the Baylor starting lineup was introduced, the lights went down and a video played on the screen over midcourt. It was a pre-recorded segment of Mulkey in the locker room with her team, talking about the 34 wins last season being most in school history and then reminding them they didn't get the ultimate prize of a national championship. The coach said it was time to starting finishing what they didn't do last season.

The Lady Bears got off to a big start, though the competition will obviously get much tougher.

They could play No. 2 Notre Dame in the WNIT championship game next weekend, and are already set to play No. 3 Tennessee and No. 4 Connecticut before Christmas. Next is Chattanooga on Sunday at home.

Howard missed its first 15 shots before Nicole Deterville made a jumper while being fouled with 8:51 left in the first half. Her free throw made it 28-3.

Baylor was up 11-0 when Jordan Madden made a 3-pointer off an inbound pass from Sims, who soon after that passed inside to Griner for a basket that made it 15-0. A couple of minutes later, with teammates on the bench counting down the shot clock, Sims passes inside to Pope for a 22-0 lead.

Saadia Doyle, the MEAC player of the year last season as a sophomore, thought she had an inside line to Howard's first basket ? then was blocked by Griner, who then scored at the other end while being fouled and made the free throw that made it 28-0.

It was Baylor's most dominating start since taking a 24-2 lead in the first 8 minutes against Texas State in January 2010. The Lady Bears led that game 47-5 at halftime.

The Lady Bears has a 42-7 lead against Howard, the MEAC tournament runner-up last season during a 16-18 season.

Doyle, who led the MEAC in scoring (18.4 points per game) and was second in rebounding (8.9) last season, finished with five points and five rebounds. Tamoria Holmes led Howard with nine points while making only 4 of 21 shots (0 for 8 on 3-pointers).

Baylor led 1-0 even before the opening tipoff. Howard was assessed a technical foul for not turning in its starting lineup within 10 minutes of the start of the game, and Kimetria Hayden made one of two free throws.

The prospect of a transitional government headed by respected non-partisan economist Mario Monti calmed markets for a second day, with Italy's 10-year borrowing rate down a further 0.21 percentage point to 6.59 percent. Shares were buoyant too, with the Milan stock index was up 1.7 percent in early trading at 15,477. (AP Photo/Pier Paolo Cito)

(AP) ? Embattled Premier Silvio Berlusconi is expected to resign Saturday after parliament's lower chamber passes European-demanded reforms, ending a 17-year political era and setting in motion a transition aimed at bringing Italy back from the brink of economic crisis.

Respected former European commissioner Mario Monti remained the top choice to try to steer the country out of its debt woes as the head of a transitional government, but Berlusconi's allies remained split over whether to support him.

Their opposition probably will not scuttle President Giorgio Napolitano's plans to ask Monti to try to form an interim government once Berlusconi resigns, but it will likely make Monti's job more difficult.

Napolitano appealed Saturday for lawmakers to put the good of the country ahead of short-term, local interests ? an indirect appeal to members of Berlusconi's party and the allied Northern League to work with the new government.

"All political forces must act with a sense of responsibility," he said.

In that vein, Berlusconi invited Monti for lunch Saturday at his office, reports said.

But Interior Minister Roberto Maroni of the Northern League made clear the League would be an opposition party to any Monti government, refusing to be part of any broad-based coalition Monti might try to form.

Berlusconi's resignation is expected later Saturday after the Chamber of Deputies approves economic reforms, which include increasing the retirement age starting in 2026 but do nothing to open up Italy's inflexible labor market.

The Senate on Friday easily passed the measures, paving the way for Berlusconi to leave office as he promised to do after losing his parliamentary majority on Tuesday. A Cabinet meeting has been scheduled for 6 p.m. (1700 GMT), presumably Berlusconi's last, before he heads to Napolitano's palazzo to tender his resignation.

It's an ignoble end for the 75-year-old billionaire media mogul, who came to power for the first time in 1994 using a soccer chant "Go Italy" as the name of his political party and became Italy's longest-serving post-war premier.

But his three stints as premier were tainted by corruption trials and charges that he used his political power to help his business interests; and his last term has been marred by sex scandals, "bunga bunga" parties and criminal charges he paid a 17-year-old girl to have sex ? accusations he denies.

Italy is under intense pressure to quickly put in place a new and effective government to replace him, one that can push through even more painful reforms and austerity measures to deal with its staggering debts, which stand at euro1.9 trillion ($2.6 trillion), or a huge 120 percent of economic output. Italy has to roll over a little more than euro300 billion ($410 billion) of its debts next year alone.

Markets battered Italy this past week amid uncertainty that Berlusconi would really leave and questions over whether Italy's notoriously paralyzed parliament could rally around a replacement. But Italy's borrowing rates pulled back after Napolitano made clear he intended to tap the politically neutral economist Monti to try to head an interim government to push the reforms through.

The yield on benchmark Italian 10-year bonds fell to 6.48 percent Friday, safely below the crisis level of 7 percent reached earlier this week.

Greece, Ireland and Portugal all required international bailouts after their own borrowing rates passed 7 percent. The Italian economy would not be so easy to save. It totals $2 trillion, twice as much as the other three countries combined.

An Italian default could tear apart the coalition of 17 countries that use the euro as a common currency and deal a strong blow to the economies of Europe and the United States, both trying to avoid recessions.

The head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, said Italy's political transition over the next few days should send a "clear sign of clarification and of credibility" that the country is now on the right path to get its finances back in order.

Speaking to reporters in Tokyo, Lagarde had high praise Saturday for Monti, saying she had great esteem for the "quality" economist with whom she had long enjoyed a "extremely warm" and effective relationship.

The IMF has a key role to play over the next few months in overseeing Italy's efforts to pull itself back from a Greek-style economic disaster, monitoring how it implements reforms to rein in debt and spur growth, which is projected at a scant 0.6 percent this year and 0.3 percent next year.

Amid market turmoil last week, Berlusconi was forced to ask for IMF monitoring of Italy's finances, a humiliating prospect for the eurozone's third-largest economy and an embarrassment for the long-defiant Berlusconi.

The premier, however, received a warm sendoff from one of his closest pals, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who called Berlusconi "one of the last Mohicans of European politics" who had brought political stability to Italy.

UK's Cameron backs Home Secretary Theresa May (AP)

LONDON ? Prime Minister David Cameron offered fresh support Wednesday to an embattled government minister who is embroiled in a scandal over a summer relaxation of border controls.

Facing down opponents in the House of Commons, Cameron said Home Secretary Theresa May had acted properly when she instituted a pilot program to reduce some border checks. He condemned border agency officials for going beyond her orders and making controls too lax during the peak summer tourist season.

Cameron said the pilot program instituted by May "did not compromise security" and supported the decision to suspend Brodie Clark, the head of the U.K. Border Force. May has said Clark acted without authorization when he dropped some controls, a charge Clarke denies.

Clark, who was suspended last week and resigned Tuesday, accuses May of giving an inaccurate description of events. He is scheduled to give testimony to lawmakers about the scandal next week.

A spokesman for the prime minister said Cameron believes Clark exceeded his authority.

"The reason for his suspension was that he went beyond what he was approved to do," the spokesman said.

"It is clear that there were various authorizations given to staff which went beyond ministerial instructions. Precisely what happened and why is the subject of an investigation."

Clark is planning to bring a lawsuit against the government, which he says forced him out of his job.

Ed Miliband, leader of the opposition Labour Party, said May's handling of the border agency had become a "chaotic fiasco" and said it was impossible to determine how many people had entered the country illegally while controls were eased.
