Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony saw surges in game console sales ...

First off is Microsoft, which sold approximately 750,000 Xbox 360 consoles.? Recent console exclusive title releases such Halo 4 may have had something to do with the impressive sales figure?and evidently, 343i's take on Halo also helped the surge in Xbox LIVE subscriptions.? Impressive as it may be, that Microsoft sold 750K units of the Xbox 360, it is worth noting that last year?s Black Friday sale of Xboxes is actually higher?almost 250,000 more in 2011.

Sony had two consoles on the market that sold well during the Black Friday frenzy stretch.? According to Sony, 525,000 PlayStation 3 were sold from Nov. 18th to Nov. 24th.? The handheld Vita didn?t do too shabby either, as 160,000 units landed in the hands of gamers who wanted satisfy their habits on the go.? The Japanese-tech giant has been struggling recently?with a record $6.4bn in losses for the 2012 fiscal year?and is trying to restructure through projected cuts in operating costs, and pink slips to about 6% of its workforce (around 10,000 people).

Nintendo?s primary market is gaming, so Black Friday was generous to the Japanese console powerhouse.? The latest console from Nintendo sold 400,000 units?albeit, it is being sold at below manufacturing costs.? The Wii, if you want to consider it defunct, sold an impressive 300,000 units.? Its smaller counterpart, the Wii Mini, was only recently announced and will launch in Canada on December 7th?Canada will serve as a ?test? market for the network-less miniaturized Wii.

Two of Nintendo?s handheld, the DS and 3DS raked in 525,000 sales combined (DS with 275,000 and 3DS with 250,000).? In this particular niche, Nintendo has been dominating the rivaling PS Vita handheld console.

This is just a total guess, but a lot of the consoles purchased on or around Black Friday probably won?t see the spark of an electrical outlet until Christmas morning.

(AP) ? Free agent outfielder B.J. Upton and the Atlanta Braves have finalized a $75.25 million, five-year contract.

Upton joins the Braves after spending his first eight major league seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays. He hit .246 with 28 homers, 78 RBIs and 31 steals this year.

Upton, who was to be introduced at a news conference Thursday, replaces free agent Michael Bourn in center field and should provide needed power from the right side.

The addition of Upton leaves Atlanta still needing to fill left field. Martin Prado is expected to move to third base, taking over for the retired Chipper Jones.

Transform your Nook into a full Android 4.1 tablet with N2A Cards

Much like the Kindle Fire, the Nook Tablet is an Android slate that runs a heavily customized Android OS. Nook owners now have a way to move beyond the confines of the custom operating system and have a full Jelly Bean tablet, all without jailbreaking their device.

CNET reports that this magic is capable through the use of an N2A Card, which is essentially a bootable Android 4.1 operating system loaded onto a MicroSD card.

By loading the N2A image into your Nook Tablet or Nook Color, you'll have access to the full Android tablet experience, complete with Google Play and all the other goodies kept out of the Nook OS.

Additionally - and ironically - this will also allow you to read Kindle books on your Nook.

Nook, but don?t touch

Better still, you needn?t actually purchase a physical card with the N2A image on it. Heading over to the N2A website will allow you to purchase and download an image which you can place on your own card thus saving you a bit of time and money.

The image file costs $19.99 for the download, but if you simply must purchase the bootable OS on a physical card you may purchase one for anywhere between $29.99 (8GB card) and $84.99 (64GB card).

Riots injure 177 in central Tunisian town

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? A strike in a low income region of Tunisia has degenerated into a second day of clashes between police and protesters, leaving 177 people injured, including some seriously, a hospital official said Wednesday.

A local labor union organized a general strike in Siliana, a poor town in Tunisia's interior, on Tuesday to protest a lack of jobs and government investment. Witnesses say police violently dispersed a peaceful march to the city hall for the second day in a row.

"A climate of panic, tension and fear has gripped the region," said Iyadh Dahmani, the area's representative in legislative assembly. He denounced the use of tear gas and shotguns by police to disperse the demonstrators.

The Interior Ministry, however, maintained that police only moved against the demonstration when they attacked city hall and threw stones at security forces.

Nejib Sebti, one of the organizers of the original strike on Tuesday, said that more than 10,000 people rallied peacefully in front of city hall calling for more local development.

"Egged on by the governor who rejects any dialogue, security forces reacted in a manner even more brutal than the repression of Ben Ali," he said, referring to the president overthrown by Tunisians in January 2011.

Since the fall of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, the Tunisian economy has suffered and the country has been wracked by demonstrations and strikes as people protest the lack of jobs.

On Tuesday, the World Bank approved a $500 million loan to help support reforms in Tunisia's financial sector to encourage investment and growth.

Tunisia's revolution, which sparked similar uprisings across the region, began in the impoverished interior of the country, which suffers in comparison to the more affluent coast.

Dr. Aymen Aissa of the local hospital told The Associated Press that 177 people had been treated at the hospital with 22 sent to the capital Tunis for further treatment ? including some with eye injuries.

The hospital had reported 14 people injured in clashes Tuesday.

In addition to more jobs, demonstrators are also calling for the resignation of the government, a member of the moderate Islamist Ennahda Party that dominated last year's elections, and the release of 14 jailed activists.

There have been reports of similar demonstrations in other local towns in the area.

Save Money by Servicing the Air Conditioner

People postpone or neglect air conditioning servicing due to financial reasons. Some of them also feel it is worthless to spend money on a device which is already functioning properly. Usually, these kind of people end up paying a huge bill when the air conditioner stops working completely.

If we carefully consider it will be evident that we lose more by not spending for upkeep. If we add all the expenses we would have incurred and compare it with the bill we needed to pay at the time of repair, I am pretty sure the second amount will be bigger. It is also almost a certainty that if you don?t go for a regular servicing, your device will malfunction at least once within a year. You may pass the first year happily with a new AC but beware of what awaits you later!

These machines go bad usually due to the extreme temperature difference they suffer. Half of its inside the room where you have set the temperature to a cosy 22 degrees whereas the remaining part of it is outside the room where the sun is blazing and the temperature are in the forties. Electrical fluctuations, bad surge protection and manufacturing defects are among other major reasons of malfunctioning.

Air conditioners have many filters to keep away particles, germs and bacterias. These filters accumulate layers of dust over them and need to be cleaned periodically. If not, they will need to work harder to pass air through those. This brings extra pressure on them and also may damage the filters permanently which are costly to repair.

Everything gets devalued and there are several methods to calculate this depreciation.

The depreciation also means that the efficiency is less. A 3 years old air conditioner surely can't match a brand new one in performance. But you can do regular service checkups and keep the gap of performance to a tolerable limit. You can also keep the electricity bill within the budget by cleaning the inside filters timely. This saving and the saving of the huge repairing bill will surely more than the expenses you incur from regular upkeep.

Therefore it is important to give your air conditioner the attention it needs and well in time. It is a job for the professionals and gladly there are many professional such service providers in the Las Vegas area who are both reliable and low-cost.

Illuminating the no-man's land of waters' surface: Strong electric charge observed at the interface between oil and water is not due to impurities

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Water repelling molecules are said to be hydrophobic. The hydration -- or formation of water interfaces around hydrophobic molecules -- is important for many biological processes: protein folding, membrane formation, transport of proteins across an interface, the transmission of action potentials across membranes. It is involved as well in the process of creating mayonnaise, or in the fact that you can get rid of fat with soap. Hydrophobic interfaces although long studied, are poorly understood.

Here's an amusing kitchen-table experiment to illustrate waters unusual properties: put a drop of pure insulating oil in a glass of pure, non-conducting water, and create an electric field using two wires hooked up to a battery. You'll see the oil move from the negative to the positive pole of the little circuit you've created. You have created charge in a mixture that was neutral, and a huge amount of it too, judging from the speed at which the droplets move. The same thing happens for gas bubbles in water; the phenomenon of charging applies to all hydrophobic/water interfaces.

A century of debates

It's not a new discovery; scientists have observed the phenomenon in the middle of the 19th century. But despite more than a century of research, the reason why such a huge electric charge exists is still the subject of heated debate.

In an article published this week in Angewandte Chemie -- a journal of reference in the field -- EPFL scientist Sylvie Roke challenges a hypothesis put forward last spring in the same journal. With experimental proof to back her up, the holder of the Julia Jacobi chair in photomedicine makes her case: the phenomenon is not caused by the inevitable "impurities" present in oils, as her colleagues claim, but rather by certain intrinsic properties of the water molecules involved.

Show the unseeable

For proof, Roke turns to the technologies in which she is an expert -- nonlinear optics and light diffusion. Using carefully filtered lasers channeled through a complex circuit of mirrors and lenses, she "hits" her sample -- barely a drop -- and measures the wavelength of the light that escapes from it. With this she can detect whether or not there are nanoscopic molecules on the interface between the oil and the water.

The precision of the observations "shows that negative charges exist even in a total absence of surface impurities, and thus the explanation put forward by my colleagues, which was derived from charge measurements and chemical titrations of the bulk liquids, doesn't hold up," says Roke. "We have developed a unique apparatus that can distinctly measure the interfacial structure of a layer on the sub-nanometer length scale that surrounds a droplet of oil in water. Thus, we can 'see' what is on the interface, and do not have to deduce it from comparing bulk properties, which is far less accurate."

Disproving a hypothesis isn't enough to explain a phenomenon, however. Roke is studying a promising avenue, that explores the intrinsic quantum nature of the water molecule itself, which might be responsible for the phenomenon. "The measurements we've made as part of this refutation could be used to try and prove this explanation," she says. "It's fascinating, because quantum effects (the smallest of the smallest) might be responsible for macroscopic charging effects that influence so many properties that relate to the functioning of the human body."

Johnny Iuzzini Has A Thing For Coffee. Big Time. | Food Republic

Johnny Iuzzini's favorite coffee desserts include espresso panna cotta and coffee caramel ice cream.

?

?Chocolate and coffee are two commodities that constantly grow and I love them to death,? says Johnny Iuzzini, the Brooklyn-based pastry chef who has worked at in leadership positions at both Daniel and Jean-Georges. In part two of our interview (read part one here), the James Beard Outstanding Pastry Chef of the Year talks about his ongoing partnership with Medaglia d?Oro and his plans to open a coffee roasting and chocolate factory.?

Why did you decide to work with Medaglia d?Oro?
I tend not to align myself too often with different brands unless there is a real attraction to me. Medaglia d?Oro was always the can that would be in the kitchen, growing up in New York and of Italian descent. I grew up with Medaglia d?Oro and I think about how hard my grandparents worked. This was one of the simple pleasures of life ? it was either brought out for a special occasion or it made an occasion special. We were a humble family and didn?t have a lot of money, so there were certain things that were our little jewels. We?d sit around with all the big silly baskets of pastries from the local bakeries and then there would always be Medaglia d?Oro. I always had a connection to that, so when they came to me, I was like, ?This is cool!?

Have you worked with coffee a lot before making desserts?
Oh, yeah. It?s a staple! I?ve been using their instant coffee forever because it dissolves immediately, it has the strongest flavor and it?s well rounded. I?ve been using it ever since I?ve been a pastry chef.

Do you have any plans to open your own coffee roastery?
The next step in my life is actually to build a chocolate factory. If I?m going to roast chocolate beans, though, why not roast coffee beans? So, I want to do a coffee roaster.

Have you visited a lot of roasters to get an idea of what you want to do?
Yeah, yeah. And chocolate places around the world. Once I have the home base, I?m going to roll out different concepts utilizing the chocolate and coffee.

What?s your go-to coffee nowadays?
I don?t drink regular coffee. I will only drink espresso or a cappuccino.

Do you have favorite spots in Brooklyn?
I?m a big fan of Toby?s Estate and live right by Blue Bottle. I like Toby?s better, actually, and I?m starting to get more and more into the culture of it.?

Would this roaster be in Williamsburg?
We?re looking all over. Williamsburg is pretty saturated but there is a reason why a McDonald?s will always open across the street from a Burger King. That?s how business works ? there?s a plus to putting myself away from everybody, but there?s also a plus to putting myself in a neighborhood where there is already a strong draw.

Would you bring in coffee desserts too?
Yeah, it?s endless. Maybe a frozen dessert line. Think about all the different cultures around the world and how they utilize coffee. It?s a matter of embracing that and also applying everything I know as a pastry chef.

Any other immediate future plans?
I have another book coming out. I?m finishing it and have to hand it in at the end of the year.

What is it called?
We haven?t decided on the name yet. The first book was called Dessert Foreplay and this one is a building block book. It?s about foundations and all the things a home cook needs to piece it all together ? what are the differences between the three different types of meringues, how do you use them, what do you use them for? It also highlights some flavor combinations that you wouldn?t think about. It?s a great book for a home baker, but it will also be a great resource for a savory cook or a small restaurant that can?t afford a pastry chef ? they can build a simple dessert menu out of the book.

What are a few of your favorite coffee desserts?
It depends on what I?m looking to do, but I love doing an espresso panna cotta ? it?s super strong and rich, but also delicate. I also do a coffee caramel ice cream, where I roast the coffee in the caramel, grind it and use cardamom. I do all sorts of cookies and brownies, where I grind the coffee right into it.

Bangladeshis protest after fire that killed 112

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) ? Thousands of Bangladeshi workers blocked the streets of a Dhaka suburb Monday, throwing stones at factories and smashing vehicles, as they demanded justice for 112 people killed in a garment-factory fire that highlighted unsafe conditions in an industry rushing to produce for major retailers around the world.

Some 200 factories were closed for the day after the protest erupted in Savar, the industrial zone where Saturday's deadly fire occurred. Protesters blocked a major highway.

The government announced that Tuesday will be a day of national mourning, with the national flag flying at half-mast in honor of the dead.

Investigators suspect that a short circuit caused the fire, said Maj. Mohammad Mahbub, fire department operations director. But he said it was not the fire itself but the lack of safety measures in the eight-story building that made it so deadly.

"Had there been at least one emergency exit through outside the factory, the casualties would have been much lower," Mahbub said. He said firefighters recovered at least 100 bodies from the factory, and 12 more people died at hospitals after jumping from the building to escape the fire.

Local media reported that up to 124 people were killed.

Mohammad Ripu, a survivor, said Monday that he tried to run out of the building when the fire alarm rang but was stopped.

"Managers told us, 'Nothing happened. The fire alarm had just gone out of order. Go back to work,'" Ripu said. "But we quickly understood that there was a fire. As we again ran for the exit point we found it locked from outside, and it was too late."

Ripu said he jumped from a second-floor window and suffered minor injuries.

Mahbub said the fire broke out on the ground floor, which was used as a warehouse, and spread quickly to the upper floors. He said many workers who retreated to the roof were rescued, but dozens of others were trapped; firefighters recovered 69 bodies from the second floor alone.

Many victims were burned beyond recognition. The bodies were laid out in rows at a school nearby. Many of them were handed over to families; unclaimed victims were taken to Dhaka Medical College for identification.

The garment-factory fire was Bangladesh's deadliest in recent memory, but such dangers have long been a fact of life as the industry has mushroomed to meet demand from major retailers around the world.

The factory is owned by Tazreen Fashions Ltd., a subsidiary of the Tuba Group. Neither Tazreen nor Tuba Group officials could be reached for comment.

The Tuba Group is a major Bangladeshi garment exporter whose clients include Wal-Mart, Carrefour and IKEA, according to its website. Its factories export garments to the U.S., Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands, among other countries. The Tazreen factory, which opened in 2009 and employed about 1,700 people, made polo shirts, fleece jackets and T-shirts.

Tazreen was given a "high risk" safety rating after a May 16, 2011, audit conducted by an "ethical sourcing" assessor for Wal-Mart, according to a document posted on the Tuba Group's website. It did not specify what led to the rating.

Wal-Mart spokesman Kevin Gardner said online documents indicating an orange or "high risk" assessment after the May 2011 inspection and a yellow or "medium risk" report after an inspection in August 2011 appeared to pertain to the factory. The August 2011 letter said Wal-Mart would conduct another inspection within one year.

Gardner said it was not clear if that inspection had been conducted or whether the factory was still making products for Wal-Mart. If a factory is rated "orange" three times in two years, Wal-Mart won't place any orders for one year. The May 2011 report was the first orange rating for the factory.

"Our thoughts are with the families of the victims of this tragedy," the retailer said in a statement. "While we are trying to determine if the factory has a current relationship with Wal-Mart or one of our suppliers, fire safety is a critically important area of Wal-Mart's factory audit program and we have been working across the apparel industry to improve fire safety education and training in Bangladesh."

In its 2012 Global Responsibility report, Wal-Mart said it ceased working with 49 factories in Bangladesh in 2011 because of fire safety issues, and was working with its supplier factories to phase out production from buildings deemed high risk.

Bangladesh has some 4,000 garment factories, many without proper safety measures. The country annually earns about $20 billion from exports of garment products, mainly to the U.S. and Europe.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association said it would stand by the victims' families and offered 100,000 takas ($1,250) to each of the families of the dead. The association's acting president, Siddiqur Rahman, said on a talk show late Sunday that Tazreen's owner was to meet with group representatives on Monday.

"We will discuss what other things we can do for the families of the dead," Rahman said on Rtv, a private television station. "We are worried about what has happened. We hope to discuss everything in detail in that meeting."

Scott Walker's Stupid, Petulant Insurance Exchange Excuses ...

So now Scott Walker is Paul Gigot's go-to for the skinny on Republican governors and health care exchanges, it seems. And as usual, Governor Walker dishes out a large helping of bullsh*t with his excuses for why he declined to set up a state-based health insurance exchange for Wisconsinites and handed off his state options to the federal government.

The complete transcript is at the end of this post, but let me summarize the lame excuses he gave:

Finally, on the question of the Medicaid expansion, Walker appears cagy when he says the idea of 100 percent funding is tempting, but you know, that damnable fiscal cliff gets in the way. (It doesn't.) Reading between the lines, I see this as the real excuse for his foot-dragging on expanding Medicaid:

Whisper with me now: Scotty Walker doesn't really want to cover those poor folks. He just wants the money for them so he can use it for other things, and keep kicking the poor in the teeth for every problem there is for as long as possible. Poor people, after all, shouldn't expect health care.

This is so stupid. The federal government is trying to REDUCE health costs by getting these people covered and in front of doctors before they are so sick the state bears a huge burden, but yeah, poor people. Can't stand the idea of poor folks getting a leg up when Scotty can't control the funds flowing through to them. Plus, fiscal cliff!

Now that I've debunked Scotty's stupid reasoning, let me share with you what my strongest reaction to this segment was. It was the closing:

To which I reply, WHY? Why will we watch Scotty's decisions carefully? Why on earth would we care what Scott Walker does? Because he's done so well managing Wisconsin? Shoot, every Wisconsinite on the planet should be overflowing with gratitude that Walker didn't see a way to profit personally or politically from state-based exchanges and the Medicaid expansion.

But yeah, Fox News. You just keep watching Scott carefully while the rest of us watch Scott Walker face indictment for his own wrongdoing in Wisconsin.

GIGOT: Welcome to The Journal Editorial Report. I'm Paul Gigot. With his second term now secure is President Obama's signature health care law a sure thing? From health insurance exchanges to a vast expansion of Medicaid, Obamacare is heavily dependent on state implementation and a growing number of the nation's thirty Republican governors are saying they won't do the federal government's bidding. Wisconsin's Scott Walker is one of them and he joins me now. Governor great to have you with us.

WALKER: Paul good to be with you.

GIGOT: So when you wrote to HHS secretary Kathleen Sebelius, you said you weren't going to set up next state exchange because you wouldn't have the flexibility to make it work. Why don't you elaborate on what you mean by lack of flexibility.

WALKER: Well for all the talk each of us as governors can comply with the law one of three ways, a state run exchange, a partnership, or deferring to the federal government, and for any of the folks who are lobbying me to have the state run exchange, they really realize that, they need to realize that in the end there is no real flexibility. In terms of final outcome there is no substantive difference between the three options. All of them lead to a federally run exchange that a one way or the other. A great example that is talking over the last few weeks of my friend Gary Herbert the governor of Utah...

GIGOT: Right.

WALKER: Utah, Paul, as you know and most of your viewers know, years ago, five or six years ago, they set up their own exchange. They did it in a free market way. They did it working with small businesses in the state. They have one of the lowest cost of any state in the country when it comes to health care. They still have quality health care, but they did it through a market driven exchange.

According to my friend Gary Herbert, that doesn't qualify under the the new Affordable Care Act, and so they're going to have to come back and put in place something that more aligns them with the what the federal government wants. To me, it's you get all the exposure without any of the flexibility. That's not a good deal. And on the behalf of the taxpayers of my state, I said no thank you. We'd rather have the federal government take on not only responsibility, but the responsibility for paying for it and not defer that to our tax payers.

GIGOT: Isn't there a risk though that if the federal government runs the entire show that you guys will be cut out totally and that basically they will, you'll have even less room for maneuvering your companies in the state, your providers in the state will really have to march entirely to Washington's dictates.

WALKER: Well there is and there's that risk but the reality is as we looked at this. In fact we started to look at it literally two years ago in December of the 2010 right after the election. I and a bunch of the other new governors of both parties went to the White House, went and met in the old executive office building with secretary Sebelius and others they talked about flexibility then.

The reality though is the flexibility was really limited mainly to things like how many staff from the state do you have? Do you have a handful like Utah or do you have hundreds like Massachusetts? In terms of the regulation of what has to be included, how it's covered in your state, those things are all seriously dictated through the federal government and and for all the talk about flexibility and it really doesn't happen. I've gotta' tell you though as a governor who believes that federalism, that believes in that the Tenth Amendment, instinctively, my gut when given the chance and anything is to have the state run it over the federal government.

But, you look at things like the food stamp program, food share, you look at things like special education, that's a mandate that for years has been mandated by the federal government the states in school districts in our country and it never comes close to covering the cost of that. I think most of us who said no and deferred to the federal government did so because we didn't want the cost incurred upon our tax payers.

GIGOT: As as the law's drafted I gather that the subsidies can only flow through state exchanges. That is the subsidies for individuals to have health care. Now if, so if the federal government delivers the exchange in your state and runs it, then at least as drafted, the subsidies will not be able to flow. Was that part of your calculation as well on this decision?

WALKER: No I think in the end there's a series of things, that being one of them. Some other things in terms of insurance regulation within a state beyond just an exchange itself, those are things that we, I think all of us governors, including some Democrats, who did the same thing we did and deferred to the federal government, we're gonna' come back to the Congress, work with members of both political parties.

I think those are reasonable adjustments, technical type adjustments, that the Congress should be able to make going forward, because as you know and again your viewers know, most of these decisions were made just a few years ago about this time of year, late in the game without any real input from governors, or for that matter, just about anybody else.

And these are the technical things that if you're gonna' have it, at least make it work I objected to it. I fought it in court I fought it politically. I lost those battles. I've conceded that. I've conceded that at least for the time being there will be exchanges in my state. They just won't be run by the state. But I think if you're gonna' make it work most people realize there has to be some technical adjustments.

GIGOT: Well, one of the things you did win on in the court case was Medicaid. So now states have the option of opting out of the Medicaid expansion. That is a big part of this bill. Have you made a decision on Medicaid yet? Are you going to opt in or out?

WALKER: I have not, but I gotta' tell you have much as I did about the original question, I have, as do governors of both parties, some real hesitations about the expansion. In our state, for example, Wisconsin already has over 90 percent of our people covered. Now we have one of the most extensive coverage systems in the country, and so that's part of the reason why we fought the bill the first place. And we already knew it pretty well, that there's a small number of people. Why blow the whole system for that?

But but having said that, our real concern is, it's a 100 percent reimbursement for this expansion for the first three years. Under the actual terms of the law itself, if you just read it, three years from now, it drops down to 90 percent. Any of us who have dealt with the federal government before on anything else and special ed was a good example I guess before, know that they come nowhere near those sorts of goals for several years after the legislation, and so I think many of us are concerned looking ahead to the future and saying are we going to add massive numbers of people on Medicaid, some in more states more than others? And ours would be a relatively minimal number compared to other states, but still, would we be adding people and not have the funding?

And that's assuming they comply with the law. In light of the fiscal cliff and everything else out there, there's a very real possibility even with the next year or two that Medicaid funds to states might be reduced and without true flexibility through block grant, now we have a real tough time dealing with what we have today, let alone anyone.

GIGOT: Now what's your estimate the number of people on Medicaid that you would have to add under the expansion? Do know that off the top of your head?

WALKER: Well it varies. That's one of the the challenges with this whole law and not just on the Medicaid expansion that but even in the terms of of the of the law itself and when we looked at the exchange. We thought the cost of just the exchange could go up go up to as much as $60 million dollars, plus the number that would be eligible, fluctuates depending on what we can do with the rest of our population. I think for a lot of governors that's also part of the concern.

If we had a concrete answer to this it might be easier to make those decisions. But we keep it sending questions to the administration, not just from Republican governors, but for the National Governors Association, and repeatedly, we get letters back that that really don't answer those questions and that's part of the problem.

GIGOT: Well Governor thanks so much being here. It is going to be a big debate and we'll watch your decisions carefully.

Suicide bomber kills at least 5 at military church in Nigeria

KADUNA, Nigeria (Reuters) - A suicide bomber drove a car full of explosives into a church inside the Jaji military barracks in Nigeria's northern Kaduna state on Sunday, killing at least five people and wounding dozens more, military sources said.

There was no claim of responsibility but Islamist sect Boko Haram, whose main targets are the security forces, has bombed several churches in the past in its fight to create an Islamic state in Nigeria where the 160 million population is evenly split between Christians and Muslims.

"I saw five bodies and scores injured," a military officer who witnessed the bombing told Reuters, asking not to be named. A military spokesman and the national emergency agency confirmed there was a bomb at the church but gave no more details.

Two army officers said a car drove into the church before exploding with the driver inside at around 1145 GMT. One of the officers said the military barracks had been cordoned off and emergency workers were treating the wounded.

A suicide bomber killed eight people and wounded more than 100 last month at a church in another part of Kaduna state, which has a mixed Muslim and Christian population and often suffers from sectarian tensions.

Boko Haram's purported spokesman Abu Qaqa, who used to confirm the sect's attacks in phone calls to journalists, was killed by the military in September, the army said. Since then there has been little public communication by the group.

Nigeria's army on Saturday offered 290 million naira for information leading to the capture of 19 leading members of Boko Haram, including 50 million naira for the sect's self-proclaimed leader Abubakar Shekau.

Boko Haram's insurgency has killed at least 2,800 people since an uprising in 2009, according to Human Rights Watch, and the group has become the largest security threat inside Africa's biggest oil exporter.

Magnesium oxide: From Earth to super-Earth

Friday, November 23, 2012

The mantles of Earth and other rocky planets are rich in magnesium and oxygen. Due to its simplicity, the mineral magnesium oxide is a good model for studying the nature of planetary interiors. New work from a team led by Carnegie's Stewart McWilliams studied how magnesium oxide behaves under the extreme conditions deep within planets and found evidence that alters our understanding of planetary evolution. It is published November 22 by Science Express.

Magnesium oxide is particularly resistant to changes when under intense pressures and temperatures. Theoretical predictions claim that it has just three unique states with different structures and properties present under planetary conditions: solid under ambient conditions (such as on the Earth's surface), liquid at high temperatures, and another structure of the solid at high pressure. The latter structure has never been observed in nature or in experiments.

McWilliams and his team observed magnesium oxide between pressures of about 3 million times normal atmospheric pressure (0.3 terapascals) to 14 million times atmospheric pressure (1.4 terapascals) and at temperatures reaching as high as 90,000 degrees Fahrenheit (50,000 Kelvin), conditions that range from those at the center of our Earth to those of large exo-planet super-Earths. Their observations indicate substantial changes in molecular bonding as the magnesium oxide responds to these various conditions, including a transformation to a new high-pressure solid phase.

In fact, when melting, there are signs that magnesium oxide changes from an electrically insulating material like quartz (meaning that electrons do not flow easily) to a metal similar to iron (meaning that electrons do flow easily through the material).

Drawing from these and other recent observations, the team concluded that while magnesium oxide is solid and non-conductive under conditions found on Earth in the present day, the early Earth's magma ocean might have been able to generate a magnetic field. Likewise, the metallic, liquid phase of magnesium oxide can exist today in the deep mantles of super-Earth planets, as can the newly observed solid phase.

"Our findings blur the line between traditional definitions of mantle and core material and provide a path for understanding how young or hot planets can generate and sustain magnetic fields," McWilliams said.

"This pioneering study takes advantage of new laser techniques to explore the nature of the materials that comprise the wide array of planets being discovered outside of our Solar System," said Russell Hemley, director of Carnegie's Geophysical Laboratory. "These methods allow investigations of the behavior of these materials at pressures and temperatures never before explored experimentally."

Read of the Day: Baby booming into real estate investing ? 8 Charts ...

The rush into investment real estate has largely been dominated by big pools of money and?foreign investment.? I?m intrigued by seeing the Wall Street machine suddenly finding blue collar rental real estate as an attractive investment.? However there has been another group of potential real estate investors that has largely been hidden from view.? Are baby boomers diving into the real estate investment game?? The prospect of buying investment real estate has never been a popular one.? Most Americans own their own home but that is largely it.? Real estate in the form of investment properties is largely an active venture.? Sure, some can pay a property manager to manage their asset but this will then require a diligent process in selecting a trustworthy team.? The big dive by?Wall Street funds?into residential real estate is interesting because this is not a quick buck industry.? Baby boomers with low yields on fixed income might be looking into buying other real estate as an investment or hedge.? Instead of speculating on this I decided to dig deep on what baby boomers are doing when it comes to other real estate outside of their primary residence.

Owning other property

One study that I found was conducted by the National Association of Realtors.? We will also compare this data with a more comprehensive survey conducted by the Fed.? The NAR survey contacted 2,000 Americans born between 1946 and 1964 regarding their real estate plans (not exactly a giant pool but we will measure this with other data):

baby boomer real estate investment properties ownership rates

One of the first items that came out was that baby boomers have a much higher home ownership rate than the overall figure.? Baby boomer home ownership is close to 70 percent.? Another item that came out in the survey was that 10 percent were planning on buying real estate in the next 12 months.? This isn?t exactly what some were saying that a large number of boomers were going to?shift the investment market game.? One interesting figure is the satisfaction with current home.? This figure will likely push more homes onto the market as many will sell to move to a more desirable place.

Baby boomer and ownership rates

So how many baby boomers own other real estate outside of their primary residence?? The survey found that 25 percent of baby boomers that own their primary residence own other real estate:

baby boomer real estate ownership

The largest segment came from land.? Rental investments are at 8 percent and vacation homes came in at 7 percent.? In other words, this is a small segment of the market.? It is hard to see how baby boomers will suddenly find a desire later in life to dive into the?landlord game.? These figures have been steady over the past decade.? Given the volatility in the housing market will baby boomers be lured back in once again to risk their money at a time when?time?is not on their side?

Comprehensive Fed Survey ? Percent of Families with Other Real Estate

One of the more comprehensive surveys on household financial health comes from the Fed?s Consumer Survey. This survey comes out every three years and has some interesting data.? First, let us see how many families actually own other real estate outside their primary residence:

percent of families with other real estate

This is interesting.? There was a jump from 2001 to 2010 in terms of how many families own real estate outside of their primary residence.? From 1989 to 2000 the figure ranged from 11.5 to 13 percent.? In 2010 it went above 14 percent.? Much of this was pulled in from the mania and easy money but from the more recent survey we examined, it looks like baby boomers in terms of rental real estate didn?t dive in fully.

Real Estate by Age

The best way to look at this is to pull data on other real estate by head of household:

real estate holdings by age

From 2000, it does look like baby boomers increased their holding in other real estate yet it doesn?t seem like it was in the form of rental property.? Maybe it came from land and also vacation homes yet that isn?t necessarily an investment more than a luxury purchase.? Short of renting the vacation home out, this is like adding a spa to your home expecting it to yield a net-net return on investment.

Younger Americans, those less than 35 do not have a big holding in other real estate and that is to be expected. ?The pent up flood of baby boomers isn?t likely to be in the form of rental real estate buying but more on them selling their current homes to move up or to move out.

Investment Property Data ? Value

The one group that seemed to ride out the real estate bubble in a better position is the 55 to 64 age group:

median value of real estate holdings

Every other category saw the median value of their other real estate holdings fall except the 55 to 64 age group.? This could be that this group did not heavily invest during the boom times and probably bought before the?bubble ran up.? Those in the 45 to 54 range saw a dip from over $150,000 to nearly $100,000.? Those less than 35 saw virtually no gain dating back to the early 2000s.? Those claiming that a flood of investors will come from the boomer ranks are simply speculating since the data does not back this up.? The current investment demand is coming from big money and?foreign funds.? The action is also coming from?flippers in boom and bust?markets looking for a quick profit.? I?m not sure if I see boomers rushing in to suddenly become flippers at this stage in their lives.

Families Owning Stocks

Americans have been hit hard in this real estate bust because most derive their wealth from real estate holdings largely from their primary residence.? Home prices although moving up when looked at the median price, largely distort the current trend.? What is happening is that the mix of distressed properties is falling in terms of the number of sales.? If we look at the Case Shiller home prices are up but maybe not to the levels being reflected in median home prices:

case shiller

The current standing?? Home prices are still off by 30 percent from the peak and are now up by 4 percent from the trough.? So households have a long way to go when it comes to repairing the damage from the bust.? Yet the stock market is now getting close to the previous peak.? Why are households not benefitting from this?
families with stocks
I?ve discussed this before and US households do not hold stocks in large numbers.? Those that do, may hold them through pensions (a dwindling segment) and it is nothing in comparison to the amount held in residential real estate.? That is why the recent stock market recovery has done very little for US households.? Only about 15 percent of Americans have direct investments with stocks (off from 21 percent in 2001).

Household Income

median income

Yet the most important figure to look at is?household income.? This is important whether we are looking at California housing or nationwide housing.? Household income adjusted for inflation is back to levels last seen in the 1990s.? So with less discretionary funds, will more baby boomers dive into investment real estate especially seeing how volatile real estate can be?? I?m sure many realize that rental property is largely an active investment.? Do boomers have the desire to take on this new avenue of investing?? It doesn?t seem like this is happening in large numbers.? One thing that can change the market dynamics is if boomers begin selling their homes to move out and transition.? This will likely add more inventory to the market and is a more likely scenario that lies ahead.

From the overall data it doesn?t seem like boomers are going full force into the investment property market.? Even if they enter in today, they are?competing with big pocket Wall Street?and foreign money that is willing to over pay.? With 10,000 hitting retirement age per day, this is a segment we need to keep our eyes on.

Reference and Education Posting Category - May Fredrick1064s blog

This can be a perspective comparable to creativity expert Ken Robinson's analysis about how precisely people lose power they have to ponder the possible uses of a paper clip since they grow older, simply because they stop communicating with them about the nature of the paper clip. Comforting news for such people is that government is providing a lot of grants and support if you're going through their studies.
