Can your breath identify stress?

Feb. 27, 2013 ? The perennial stress-buster -- a deep breath -- could become stress-detector, claims a team of researchers from the UK. According to a new pilot study, published February 28, in IOP Publishing's Journal of Breath Research, there are six markers in the breath that could be candidates for use as indicators of stress.

The researchers hope that findings such as these could lead to a quick, simple and non-invasive test for measuring stress; however, the study, which involved just 22 subjects, would need to be scaled-up to include more people, over a wider range of ages and in more "normal" settings, before any concrete conclusions can be made, they state.

Lead-author of the study, Professor Paul Thomas, said: "If we can measure stress objectively in a non-invasive way, then it may benefit patients and vulnerable people in long-term care who find it difficult to disclose stress responses to their carers, such as those suffering from Alzheimer's."

The study, undertaken by researchers at Loughborough University and Imperial College London, involved 22 young adults (10 male and 12 female) who each took part in two sessions: in the first, they were asked to sit comfortably and listen to non-stressful music; in the second, they were asked to perform a common mental arithmetic test that has been designed to induce stress.

A breath test was taken before and after each session, whilst heart-rates and blood pressures were recorded throughout. The breath samples were examined using a technique known as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and then statistically analysed and compared to a library of compounds.

Two compounds in the breath -- 2-methyl, pentadecane and indole -- increased following the stress exercise which, if confirmed, the researchers believe could form the basis of a rapid test.

A further four compounds were shown to decrease with stress, which could be due to changes in breathing patterns.

"What is clear from this study is that we were not able to discount stress. It seems sensible and prudent to test this work with more people over a range of ages in more normal settings.

"We will need to think carefully about experimental design in order to explore this potential relationship further as there are ethical issues to consider when deliberately placing volunteers under stress. Any follow up study would need to be led by experts in stress," Professor Thomas continued.

Breath profiling has become an attractive diagnostic method for clinicians, and recently researchers have found biomarkers associated with tuberculosis, multiple cancers, pulmonary disease and asthma. It is still unclear how to best manage external factors, such as diet, environment and exercise, which can affect a person's breath sample.

"It is possible that stress markers in the breath could mask or confound other key compounds that are used to diagnose a certain disease or condition, so it is important that these are accounted for," said Professor Thomas.

The researcher's initial assumptions are that stressed people breathe faster and have increased pulse rates and an elevated blood-pressure, which is likely to change their breath profile. They emphasise, however, that it is too soon to postulate the biological origins and the roles of the compounds as part of a stress-sensitive response.

Razer Edge gaming tablet starts at $1,000, pre-orders begin March ...

A?favorite of ours from CES, the tablet hardcore gamers have been waiting for is almost here. Razer is taking pre-orders for the Edge and Edge Pro tablets?on Friday, March 1 for an end-of-the-month delivery date. Unfortunately, pre-orders are only in America and Canada; those in Europe and Asia will have to sit tight for the Edges? international release.

Unlike other tablets on the market, both Razer slates are full Windows 8 machines that are powered by Intel processors and Nvidia discrete graphics (they?re more powerful than most mainstream computers with integrated graphics), yet they?re mobile enough for gaming even when you?re not in front of your desktop. For gamers who don?t consider Angry Birds Star Wars to be a ?real? game worth of playing on a mobile device, the Razer Edge and Edge Pro makes it possible for you to continue your world domination in Civilization IV, whether you?re at home or on the road.

Both the Edge and Edge Pro share the same 10.1-inch 1366 x 768 resolution touchscreen, but they have slightly different parts under the hood to suit different budgets. At $1,000, the Edge is slightly more affordable as it has an Intel i5 processor and a 64GB solid-state drive. For a larger capacifty internal storage and faster processor, you?ll need to drop at least $1,300 for the Edge Pro, which packs an Intel i7 processor, Nvidia GT 640M LE graphics, and a 128GB SSD. Alternatively, you can opt for the 256GB SSD for $1,450.

Razer Edge home conole dock

At CES 2013, Razer also introduced a bunch of accessories that can transform the tablet into other form factors. For $250, you can snap the tablet into a gamepad controller that adds physical control buttons to make it easier to play button-smashers (as pictured at the top of the page). Or, for $99,?you can dock the slate into the home console dock, which frees up your hands so you can play with a game controller. Along with the tablet, you can pre-order the gamepad controller, home console dock, and extended battery accessories on March 1, but you?ll have to wait until Q3 to order the keyboard dock.

Being able to play all your PC games on a mobile device that you can take anywhere is really the holy grail for hardcore gamers, so we?re excited to see whether Razer?s Edge tablets will be more than just over-priced Windows 8 slates. We can?t wait to give these a try when they land in late March. Stay tuned for our full review.

Lawyer: Cop's plan to cook women was just a fantasy

By Chris Francescani, Reuters

NEW YORK -- A New York City police officer accused of plotting to kidnap and cannibalize women had been having dark fantasies since he was a teenager, but had no intention of ever turning those thoughts into reality, his attorney said at the start of his federal trial.

Attorney Julia Gatto also said Monday that Officer Gilberto Valle, who faces 20 years to life in prison if convicted, talked online about torturing his own wife and her female friends and colleagues.

What turns him on is "the idea of a woman -- oiled, bound, laid out on a platter with an apple in her mouth, about to be cooked," Gatto told jurors in opening arguments. "That's his dirty little secret."

She argued that Valle was engaged in online sexual fantasy role play involving a little-known Internet subculture where people with unconventional desires gather to act them out in cyberspace but with no intention of ever carrying out criminal acts.

"There are literally thousands and thousands of people doing the same thing, online, every day," she told jurors, saying that government investigators misunderstood what they found on his computer.

Federal prosecutors countered that Valle, who has pleaded not guilty, took the plot beyond fantasy and into real life when he "engaged in surveillance of some of the women he was targeting."

Prosecutors say Valle, 28, improperly accessed a federal law enforcement database to get information about one woman, and met a second woman -- a former classmate -- for brunch.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Randall Jackson also said Valle searched online for homemade recipes for chloroform to subdue victims and recipes for cooking human flesh.

"Make no mistake," Jackson told jurors. "Officer Valle was deadly serious."

Valle's estranged wife testified Monday that she placed web tracking software on the couple's computer last fall after she said he began acting strange. When asked what she discovered, she burst into tears.

Kathleen Mangan-Valle, 27, said she found pictures of herself and her female friends and colleagues, attached to emails her husband sent discussing extreme brutality and murder.

"I was going to be hung up by my feet and my throat slit," Mangan-Valle testified, choking back tears.

She said Valle also discussed kidnapping one of her friends and delivering her to a New Jersey mechanic for torture and murder. Another was to be "burned alive" and two more would be "raped in front of each other to heighten their terror," she added.

Mangan-Valle continued to cry as she quoted emails she said she found in which her husband discussed "driving a spit through their wombs over and over again."

"He kept saying the suffering was for his own enjoyment,'' she said, sobbing.

Research indicates that half of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14, well before adulthood. Three new studies investigate the cognitive, genetic and environmental factors that may contribute to mental health disorders in adolescence. The studies are published in Psychological Science and Clinical Psychological Science, journals of the Association for Psychological Science.

Social-Information-Processing Patterns Mediate the Impact of Preventive Intervention on Adolescent Antisocial Behavior

Kenneth A. Dodge, Jennifer Godwin, and The Conduct Problems Prevention Research Group

Fast Track is a preventive intervention designed to help children who show aggression at an early age. The intervention addresses kids' social-cognitive processes in several ways, including social-skill training groups, parent groups, and classroom curricula. In this study, the researchers investigated the processes underlying this intervention's success. A total of 891 kindergarteners who were at high risk for adolescent antisocial behavior were randomly assigned to receive either the Fast Track intervention or a control program. The data revealed that children in the intervention showed decreased levels of antisocial behavior at the end of 9th grade, which was driven, in part, by improvement on three specific social-cognitive processes. These results suggest that social-cognitive processes may play an important role in the development of antisocial behavior in youth.

A Comparison of Two Models of Urgency: Urgency Predicts Both Rash Action and Depression in Youth

Gregory T. Smith, Leila Guller, and Tamika C.B. Zapolski

Smith and colleagues test two competing theories concerning the trait of urgency. One theory posits that urgency reflects the people's tendency to act rashly or impulsively when they're emotional. Another theory suggests that urgency reflects a general responsiveness to emotions that can lead to rash action (such as heavy drinking or binge eating) or ill-advised inaction (which is associated with symptoms of depression). In previous research, Smith and colleagues found that urgency levels in 5th grade predicted addictive behaviors (including alcohol consumption, binge eating, and smoking) in 6th grade, which is consistent with both theories. In this study, the researchers found that level of urgency in 5th grade also predicted higher levels of depression at the end of 6th grade. These results support the view that urgency can lead either to rash action or ill-advised inaction. The researchers conclude that urgency may be an important trait in various diagnoses, across both internalizing and externalizing disorders.

Genetic and Environmental Influences on Rumination, Distraction, and Depressed Mood in Adolescence

Mollie N. Moore, Rachel H. Salk, Carol A. Van Hulle, Lyn Y. Abramson, Janet S. Hyde, Kathryn Lemery-Chalfant, and H. Hill Goldsmith

About one in 10 adolescents will experience major depression or dysthymia by age 18. Rumination, the process of dwelling on one's feelings and problems, is an established cognitive risk factor for depression. In this study, Moore and colleagues investigated whether response styles associated with rumination might account for some of the genetic vulnerability associated with depression. A total of 756 adolescent twins ages 12 to 14 completed the Response Styles Questionnaire and several measures of depressive symptoms. Brooding was positively correlated with depressive symptoms, while distraction was negatively correlated with the symptoms. About 54% of the variation in depression symptoms could be attributed to genetic variation, while 37% of the variation in reflection and 30% of the variation in distraction were accounted for by genetic variation. Further analyses showed that individual differences in distraction share both genetic and environmental sources of variation with depression. Together, these results suggest that the same genetic factors that contribute to distraction may protect against depression.

Advanced breast cancer edges up in younger women - Herald Online

? Advanced breast cancer has increased slightly among young women, a 34-year analysis suggests. The disease is still uncommon among women younger than 40, and the small change has experts scratching their heads about possible reasons.

The results are potentially worrisome because young women's tumors tend to be more aggressive than older women's, and they're much less likely to get routine screening for the disease.

Still, that doesn't explain why there'd be an increase in advanced cases and the researchers and other experts say more work is needed to find answers.

It's likely that the increase has more than one cause, said Dr. Rebecca Johnson, the study's lead author and medical director of a teen and young adult cancer program at Seattle Children's Hospital.

"The change might be due to some sort of modifiable risk factor, like a lifestyle change" or exposure to some sort of cancer-linked substance, she said.

Johnson said the results translate to about 250 advanced cases diagnosed in women younger than 40 in the mid-1970s versus more than 800 in 2009. During those years, the number of women nationwide in that age range went from about 22 million to closer to 30 million - an increase that explains part of the study trend "but definitely not all of it," Johnson said.

Other experts said women delaying pregnancy might be a factor, partly because getting pregnant at an older age might cause an already growing tumor to spread more quickly in response to pregnancy hormones.

Obesity and having at least a drink or two daily have both been linked with breast cancer but research is inconclusive on other possible risk factors, including tobacco and chemicals in the environment. Whether any of these explains the slight increase in advanced disease in young women is unknown.

There was no increase in cancer at other stages in young women. There also was no increase in advanced disease among women older than 40.

Overall U.S. breast cancer rates have mostly fallen in more recent years, although there are signs they may have plateaued.

Some 17 years ago, Johnson was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer at age 27, and that influenced her career choice to focus on the disease in younger women.

"Young women and their doctors need to understand that it can happen in young women," and get checked if symptoms appear, said Johnson, now 44. "People shouldn't just watch and wait."

The authors reviewed a U.S. government database of cancer cases from 1976 to 2009. They found that among women aged 25 to 39, breast cancer that has spread to distant parts of the body - advanced disease - increased from between 1 and 2 cases per 100,000 women to about 3 cases per 100,000 during that time span.

The study was published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

About one in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, but only 1 in 173 will develop it by age 40. Risks increase with age and certain gene variations can raise the odds.

Routine screening with mammograms is recommended for older women but not those younger than 40.

Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, the American Cancer Society's deputy chief medical officer, said the results support anecdotal reports but that there's no reason to start screening all younger women since breast cancer is still so uncommon for them.

He said the study "is solid and interesting and certainly does raise questions as to why this is being observed." One of the most likely reasons is probably related to changes in childbearing practices, he said, adding that the trend "is clearly something to be followed."

Dr. Ann Partridge, chair of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's advisory committee on breast cancer in young women, agreed but said it's also possible that doctors look harder for advanced disease in younger women than in older patients. More research is needed to make sure the phenomenon is real, said Partridge, director of a program for young women with breast cancer at the Harvard-affiliated Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The study shouldn't cause alarm, she said. Still, Partridge said young women should be familiar with their breasts and see the doctor if they notice any lumps or other changes.

Software engineer Stephanie Carson discovered a large breast tumor that had already spread to her lungs; that diagnosis in 2003 was a huge shock.

"I was so clueless," she said. "I was just 29 and that was the last thing on my mind."

Carson, who lives near St. Louis, had a mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation and other treatments and she frequently has to try new drugs to keep the cancer at bay.

Because most breast cancer is diagnosed in early stages, there's a misconception that women are treated, and then get on with their lives, Carson said. She and her husband had to abandon hopes of having children, and she's on medical leave from her job.

"It changed the complete course of my life," she said. "But it's still a good life."

Make Yourself At Home With Home Improvement | Thompson Real ...

Home improvement projects provide something for every homeowner, whether it is sprucing up a tired home, or preparing to get the most from a potential sale, there is no end to the benefits available. The article that follows offers terrific advice for anyone wanting to work on their home.

Shop around for the best deals. New flooring is very expensive if you do not shop around for good deals. There are bargain places and discount supply stores that will help.

An easy way to protect walls and floors from marks, and to protect your young children while you?re at it, is to pad furniture with sharp edges. Local retailers should have corner protectors and foam tapes you can use to dull sharp furniture edges or objects that your child is sure to collide with at some point. Tape down wiring to prevent accidents such as tripping over them or even more serious issues.

Before making a home purchase, get a professional to inspect it. By doing this, you do not have to look for everything that needs to be replaced or fixed. An objective professional will provide you with all the necessary information without any argument or haggling to the price of the home.

When you wish to paint a home or just a few walls, then you really need to figure out how many buckets of paint you?ll need. Taking measurements and estimating the cost of supplies is the best way to find out how much a job could cost to do. Take your time, and do calculations the right way.

When you are looking for people to help you with a home renovation project, have several alternates in mind who can help in case there is any problem. It is wise to have a backup plan in place in case something goes wrong. This also holds true in this case.

Home improvement is not just for the professionals on TV. It can be done enjoyably by almost anyone. It might just be a new paint color in your bedroom, or you could go all out and remodel your kitchen, but whatever your choice is will bring not only comfort to your home, but value as well. Get started today by using the tips from this article.

For more real estate info, visit: http://www.latimes.com/classified/realestate/. Home improvement is something that applies to everyone from time to time. There may be different motivations, but every homeowner thinks about home improvement. Regardless of whether it?s for appearance or extra money, home improvement can benefit anybody.

Kyocera DuraPro keeps the rugged flip phone alive on US Cellular for $100

Kyocera DuraPro keeps the rugged flip phone alive on US Cellular, ships February 28th for $99

The rumors of the basic cellphone's death have been greatly exaggerated -- it's just finding niches to hide in while smartphones take over the mainstream. Witness today's launch of the Kyocera DuraPro on US Cellular. Although it's just a flip phone, it meets the US military's 810G specs for dust, shock, temperature and water resistance, all of which help it survive a rough workplace or an accidental splash at the beach. That and a loud speakerphone are the real highlights, although you will get microSD support and a 3.2-megapixel camera for your trouble. Do the math before you pick up a DuraPro in-store on February 28th, though. At $100 on contract after a $50 rebate, it's carrying smartphone-level pricing that could steer some buyers away from its retro rugged chic.

TSX slumps, hit by fears of Italian gridlock

TORONTO (Reuters) - The prospect of a divided Italian parliament prompted a late retreat in banking and other Canadian financial stocks on Monday, pushing the main Toronto equity index into the red after it had earlier hit a three-week high.

Voting projections in Italy show no coalition garnered enough votes to form a government, reviving fears about an extended period of uncertainty in Europe's third-largest economy.

"The basic problem is that the whole Europe situation had been shunted to the back-burner ever since the beginning of this year," said Elvis Picardo, strategist at Global Securities in Vancouver.

"The latest developments show that there is a degree of risk that is still attached to the continent," he said. "It's causing investors to rethink some of their assumptions about the market."

Royal Bank of Canada fell 1 percent to C$63.59, insurer Manulife Financial Corp lost 2.1 percent to C$14.84 and its rival, Sunlife Financial Inc , slipped 1.9 percent to C$28.34.

Picardo said investors may also be feeling more cautious about bank earnings, which are due to be reported this week and next, after a recent string of weak domestic housing, employment, inflation and retail sales data. <.to/>

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> ended down 50.76 points, or 0.40 percent, at 12,650.87.

It had earlier hit 12,832.71, its highest level since January 30.

The tide turned in the last hour of trade, and seven of the 10 sectors ended in negative territory.

Energy stocks took a beating, with Suncor Energy Inc falling 1.4 percent to C$31.52 to end the day as the heaviest weight on the index.

It had earlier risen, along with fellow oil sands producer Canadian Natural Resources Ltd , after a Barron's article suggesting each stock could gain 25 percent in the next year.

Canadian Natural Resources finished up 0.6 percent at C30.55.

Gold miners provided some of the only gains, as the price of bullion rose in part on the back of the Italian uncertainty.

Barrick Gold, the world's biggest producer, gained 2.2 percent to C$31.81, while four more gold miners rounded out the top five positive influences on the index.

Shares in BlackBerry ended flat at C$13.48, giving up early gains after the smartphone maker's chief executive told a German newspaper that sales of its make-or-break BB10 line were going better than expected and that the company had increased production to keep up.

6 killed in attack in northern Nigeria

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) ? Nigeria's military says that at least six people have been killed in an attack in northeastern Nigeria, a region under attack by Islamic extremists.

Lt. Eli Lazarus said Sunday the attack happened Saturday night in Ngalda, a town in Yobe state.

Lazarus said no one has been arrested for the attack. However, local residents say they suspect the radical Islamic sect known as Boko Haram carried out the attack. Boko Haram is blamed for attacks which killed 792 people in 2012, according to a count by The Associated Press.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? At least 28 NASCAR fans were injured Saturday when large chunks of debris, including a tire, sailed into the grandstands when a car flew into the fence at Daytona International Speedway on a frightening last-lap accident in the second-tier Nationwide Series race.

The crash began as the field closed in on the finish line and sent rookie Kyle Larson's car sailing into the fence that separates the track from the seats.

Large chunks of Larson's car landed in the grandstands. The car itself had its entire front end sheared off, with the burning engine wedged through a gaping hole in the fence.

Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood said 14 fans were treated on site, and 14 fans were taken to local hospitals. Chitwood did not give any updates on their conditions.

Volusia County spokesman Dave Byron said six people with serious injuries were taken by ambulance to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.

"Those six met the condition of trauma patients," Byron said, adding one person was also taken to Halifax in Port Orange. That injury was not serious.

Lindsay Rew, a spokeswoman for Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, said its Daytona Beach hospital had one fan there who was in good condition. She said they were expecting three more people who were coming by ambulance, but she didn't yet know their conditions.

"There obviously was some intrusion into the fence and fortunately with the way the event's equipped up, there were plenty of emergency workers ready to go and they all jumped in on it pretty quickly," NASCAR President Mike Helton said after the accident. "Right now, it's just a function of determining what all damage is done. They're moving folks, as we've seen, to care centers and take some folks over to Halifax Medical."

As emergency workers tended to injured fans and ambulance sirens wailed in the background, a somber Tony Stewart skipped the traditional post-race victory celebration.

Stewart, who won for the 19th time at Daytona and seventh time in the last nine season-opening Nationwide races, was in no mood to celebrate.

"The important thing is what going on on the frontstretch right now," said Stewart, the three-time NASCAR champion. "We've always known, and since racing started, this is a dangerous sport. But it's hard. We assume that risk, but it's hard when the fans get caught up in it.

"So as much as we want to celebrate right now and as much as this is a big deal to us, I'm more worried about the drivers and the fans that are in the stands right now because that was ... I could see it all in my mirror, and it didn't look good from where I was at."

The accident spread into the upper deck and emergency crews treated fans on both levels. There were five stretchers that appeared to be carrying fans out, and a helicopter flew overhead. A forklift was used to pluck Larson's engine out of the fence, and there appeared to be a tire in the stands.

Daytona President Joie Chitwood waited by steps as emergency workers attended to those in the stands. Across the track, fans pressed against a fence and used binoculars trying to watch. Wrecked cars and busted parts were strewn across the garage.

"It's a violent wreck. Just seeing the carnage on the racetrack, it's truly unbelievable," driver Justin Allgaier said.

It was a chaotic finish to a race that was stopped nearly 20 minutes five laps from the finish by a 13-car accident that sent driver Michael Annett to a local hospital, where his Richard Petty Motorsports team said he would be held overnight with bruising to his chest.

The race resumed with three laps to go, and the final accident occurred with Regan Smith leading as he headed out of the final turn to the checkered flag. He admittedly tried to block Brad Keselowski to preserve the win.

"I tried to throw a block, it's Daytona, you want to go for the win here," Smith said. "I don't know how you can play it any different other than concede second place, and I wasn't willing to do that today. Our job is to put them in position to win, and it was, and it didn't work out."

As the cars began wrecking all around Smith and Keselowski, Stewart slid through for the win, but Larson plowed into Keselowski and his car was sent airborne into the stands. When Larson's car came to a stop, it was missing its entire front end. The 20-year-old, who made his Daytona debut this week, stood apparently stunned, hands on his hips, several feet away from his car, before finally making the mandatory trip to the care center.

He later said his first thought was with the fans.

"I hope all the fans are OK and all the drivers are all right," Larson said. "I took a couple big hits there and saw my engine was gone. Just hope everybody's all right."

He said he was along for the ride in the last-lap accident.

"I was getting pushed from behind, I felt like, and by the time my spotter said lift or go low, it was too late," Larson said. "I was in the wreck and then felt like it was slowing down and I looked like I could see the ground. Had some flames come in the cockpit, but luckily I was all right and could get out of the car quick."

It appeared fans were lined right along the fence when Larson's car sailed up and into it.

"Honestly, the race itself pales in comparison to the injuries sustained by the fans," said Chip Ganassi, the team owner who has Larson in his driver development program. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the fans that were injured as a result of the crash. As for Kyle, I am very happy that he is OK."

Keselowski watched a replay of the final accident, but said his first thoughts were with the fans. As for the accident, he agreed he tried to make a winning move and Smith tried to block.

"He felt like that's what he had to do, and that's his right. The chaos comes with it," Keselowski said. "I made the move and he blocked it, and the two of us got together and started the chain events that caused that wreck. First and foremost, just want to make sure everyone in the stands is OK and we're thinking about them."

Keselowski said the incident could cast a pall on Sunday's Daytona 500.

"I think until we know exactly the statuses of everyone involved, it's hard to lock yourself into the 500," Keselowski said. "Hopefully, we'll know soon and hopefully everyone's OK. And if that's the case, we'll staring focusing on Sunday."

Conserving corals by understanding their genes

Friday, February 22, 2013

In reef-building corals variations within genes involved in immunity and response to stress correlate to water temperature and clarity, finds a study published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Genetics. This information could be used to conserve or rebuild reefs in areas affected by climate change, by changes in extreme weather patterns, increasing sedimentation or altered land use.

A research team led by the Australian Institute of Marine Science, and in collaboration with Penn State University and the Aix-Marseille University, studied DNA variations (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms, SNPs) across populations of reef corals found at a range of temperatures and water clarity along the Great Barrier Reef.

SNPs which correlated to water clarity and water temperature preferred by cauliflower coral were found in genes involved in providing immune response, and regulating stress-induced cell-death. This means that coral with a specific version of these genes tended to grow at higher temperatures (or water clarity) and another variant at lower. A similar story was found for staghorn coral - SNP in genes involved in detoxification, immune response, and defense against reactive oxygen damage, were found to be associated with temperature or to water clarity.

Dr Petra Lundgren, from The Australian Institute of Marine Science, explained, "Corals are particularly vulnerable to climate change. Not only is the temperature of the water they live in affected but extreme weather and higher rainfall leads to increased levels of sediment, agricultural runoff, and fresh water on the reef. This work opens up possibilities for us to enhance reef resilience and recovery from impacts of climate change and pollution. For example, if in the future we need to restore coral populations, we can make sure that we use the most robust strains of corals to do so."

President Sirleaf Thanks African Development Bank for Strong Support to Liberia - Calls for New Approaches in Dealing With Fragile States and Mano River Union

Monrovia ? President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, on a visit to the temporary headquarters of the African Development Bank in Tunis, thanked the Bank for all that it has done to bring Liberia to the level of progress it has achieved, and she made a commitment to do all the things that Liberia ought to do to enable the country to achieve the Agenda for Transformation and to see Liberia's new vision come to fruition for the prosperity of the Liberian people.

President Sirleaf also discussed with the Board such topics as ADB support to fragile states, and its Mano River Union trade corridor program. The Liberian President is current Chair of the Mano River Union, whose members also include Sierra Leone, Guinea and la C?te d'Ivoire.

According to an Executive Mansion dispatch from Tunis, the Liberian President came to the Tunisian capital at the invitation of the ADB President, Mr. Donald Kaberuka, to address the Board of Executive Directors and the Deputies of the African Development Fund as the Bank Group met for the First Replenishment Meeting for ADF-13. Among those accompanying President Sirleaf to Tunis was her Legal Advisor, Cllr. Seward Cooper, who was Chief Counsel and later the first head of the Integrity and Anti-Corruption Division of the ADB.

The Board of Executive Directors comprises representatives of all the member countries of the Bank, both African and non-African countries, who approve the Bank's policies and operations. The Deputies of the African Development Fund are the representatives of those countries that contribute to the Fund. They are the concessional window of the Bank, which lends money to least-developed countries like Liberia.

Said the Liberian President to the Board of Executive Directors: "The special circumstances of fragile states need to be addressed. They are just not the same as countries that arenormal. The capacity is weak, the resources are scarce, the imperatives of urgency are more intense in fragile states because whatever you do is to ensure that you begin to consolidate those gains and deliver to people in a much more timely fashion to manage expectations to prevent any chance of slipping back into conflict."

Of the Mano River Union countries, she said: "All of our four countries - some 40 million people - can be considered fragile because we've all been part of a regional war, one way or the other, and today we have these alliances across borders....Today, the four countries are working hard to establish regional integration and cooperation as the only means whereby each can prosper."

US senator calls Jerusalem Israel's capital

JERUSALEM (AP) ? An influential Republican senator has called Jerusalem the capital of Israel, taking a stand on an explosive issue between Israel and the Palestinians.

The fate of Jerusalem is one of the most intractable issues in the Mideast conflict with both Israelis and Palestinians claiming rights to the city.

In his first official visit to the country, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio told Israel's president on Wednesday that Jerusalem is "of course the capital of your country." He reiterated America's bipartisan support for Israel.

Rubio, a favorite of his party's conservative wing, met Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

His visit comes ahead of President Barack Obama's scheduled visit in March. Obama has not made a similar declaration about Jerusalem.

BlackBerry 10 Smartphones to Hit India By Next Week

New Delhi: Smartphone maker BlackBerry will unveil its new line of BlackBerry 10-powered devices in the country on February 25. The launch in India follows the global launch of the new operating system and two devices -- Z10 and Q10 -- powered by the new platform on January 30.

The phones will be introduced at an event in Mumbai, the Canada-based company said in an invitation sent to media. However, the pricing details of the phone were not available. The struggling Smartphone maker has also re-christened itself as 'BlackBerry' from Research in Motion earlier as it looks to turn around its fortunes with the new launch.

The company, which pioneered email on the go, is now undertaking a "journey of transformation of business and brand". The two devices -- Z10 and Q10 -- will compete with Apple's iPhone and those based on Google's Android operating system, which have gained popularity across the world.

RIM's stocks also took a beating, declining close to 72 per cent from over USD 61 apiece in January 2010 to USD 17.54 on January 25, 2012. It had fallen to as low as USD 6.30 in September 2012.

In July-September period of 2012, Android Smartphones had a market share of 72.4 per cent, while Apple's iOS market share stood at 13.9 per cent compared to RIM's share of 5.3 per cent.

However, BlackBerry has a strong fan following in India, especially among youth. As per CyberMedia Research, RIM's market share in Indian Smartphone market stood at 12.1 per cent during January-June 2012 period.

RIM is betting big on touch screen with its new User Interface (UI) on Z10 and other features like BlackBerry Balance. BlackBerry, which faced strong criticism for lack of content on its application store, has also revamped it to take on Android's Play Store and Apple's App Store.

BlackBerry, which for long been touted as an enterprise device, has introduced 'BlackBerry Balance' that will allow users separate professional data and applications from music, photographs and other personal items. The new devices also feature enhanced camera features.

BlackBerry Z10 was first unveiled in UK, last month, followed by Canada, UAE and USA earlier this month.

Move over, fist bump: Rubio bumps water bottles with Bibi

Benjamin Netanyahu and Marco Rubio (Photo courtesy of Marco Rubio's office)

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio's drink of water in the middle of his televised response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address earlier this month truly is "the sip heard 'round the world."

At a meeting Wednesday in Jerusalem, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held up a water bottle and toasted the Florida Republican after Rubio told him the story.

?It was totally spontaneous following their more formal photos in front of the U.S. and Israeli flags," a person who was in the room told Yahoo News. "Rubio was directed to his chair and then picked up his water, held it up and said, ?Cheers!? When he sat down he quickly told the story of how he raised a bunch of money by selling water bottles following his SOTU response. The prime minister did the toast with the water bottle, and Sen. Rubio laughingly played along.?

Since the night of Obama's annual address, Rubio's water chugging has been parodied countless times online and was the subject of a Saturday Night Live sketch last week. The Florida senator joined in the fun last Wednesday by selling water bottles on his political action committee website, which has since raised more than $100,000.

Rubio, a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Foreign Relations Committee, is currently on a trip through the Middle East.

United says removing Boeing 787 from flight plans

(Reuters) - United Continental Holdings said on Thursday it was taking Boeing Co's grounded 787 Dreamliner out of its flying plans through June 5, except for a Denver-to-Tokyo route scheduled for a tentative launch in May.

Meanwhile, Japanese investigators studying fuel leaks on the 787 found a problem with the paint on equipment controlling the fuel-tank valve, the Nikkei news service reported, citing people familiar with the details.

United's decision to mostly exclude the 787 from its schedule until June comes as other airlines that have 787s are setting schedules for coming months while still uncertain about when the plane will be able to resume service.

The Dreamliner fleet has been grounded for the past five weeks after batteries burned on two planes in January. Boeing is due to meet with the head of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on Friday to present measures designed to prevent such failures, a source told Reuters, even though the root cause of the problem has not been determined.

United spokeswoman Christen David said in a statement on Thursday that the carrier's Denver to Tokyo Narita International route, originally set to start March 31, had been postponed to May 12. The launch would ultimately depend on a successful resolution of the safety incidents that have grounded the 787. Other service with the 787 won't resume until after June 5, David said.

"We are taking the 787 out of our schedule through June 5, except for Denver-Narita, which will tentatively launch on May 12," United's statement said.

Boeing was not immediately available for comment.

United's statement doesn't mean that the 787 won't be ready to fly again before June 5, said Carter Leake, an analyst at BB&T Capital Markets.

Rather, it means United won't put the jet into service before then. If the plane is available sooner, but United can't use it on its scheduled routes, Boeing likely would have to pay United compensation that Leake estimates at about $800,000 a month, based on lease rates.

"This does not tell you that Boeing's plane is grounded until June," he said. "It tells you that Boeing's costs to United could be as if it's grounded until June."

A "superbox" to contain the battery or some other fix "might come sooner, but United is not paying" to have the jet until after June 5, he addded.

In a similar move, Poland's national airline LOT said last week that it would not use the 787 before October and that it is seeking compensation from Boeing.

United is the only U.S. carrier currently operating the 787 and has six of the planes, worth $207 million apiece at list prices. Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways have most of the 50 jets delivered to airlines so far.

Meanwhile, Japan's Nikkei newspaper, citing sources, reported in its February 22 morning edition that Transport Ministry investigators found deficiencies in how electrical-insulating paint was applied to a driving mechanism that opens and closes the 787's fuel-tank valve. The ministry also found foreign matter stuck on a switch on the mechanism.

The ministry is discussing the cause and measures to prevent recurrences with the U.S. FAA and Boeing, the Nikkei report added.

In addition to the battery problem, investigators have been looking into a case in which a Japan Airlines 787 leaked fuel while taxiing to the runway for take-off at Boston's Logan International Airport in January.

Four killed in Tustin, California after college student shooting rampage

Early Tuesday morning, community college student Ali Syed killed three people in one hour in Tustin, California and then committed suicide as police sought after him.

The 20-year-old shot and killed Courtney Aoki, 20, in his home then proceeded to murder two others during car jackings on a busy freeway in Orange County. According to NBC Southern California, Syed?s relationship to the woman is still unclear.

After killing Aoki, Syed drove to a shopping center with a flat tire and killed a man who was in his Cadillac waiting for his son. He then went across the street to a Mobil station where he took the keys to a man?s pickup without injuring him. Syed injured two other drivers and shot at cars in the freeway before his suicide.

Tustin police Chief Scott Jordan told the The Associated Press, ?He says something to the effect of, 'I've killed somebody. Today's my last day. I don't want to hurt you. Give me your keys. He hands over the keys and he gets in the truck and leaves."

Syed then got on the highway and began shooting at cars and killed one man in his BMW. He then took his shotgun to a Micro Center and killed a construction worker nearby.

Jordan told The Associated Press, ?There is no conspiracy here, there are no outstanding suspects, it was a very, very unfortunate situation, but I don't think the people here in Orange County have to be worried about their safety.?

Poll results: Texas timing is good, as California drives folks away

Along the line of governor?s going on big poaching tours, our Business Pulse Survey this week asked: What's your take on Rick Perry?s visit to California?

Other states can?t keep their hands off California. First Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced an advertising blitz to lure businesses to his state, and then he went on a recruiting tour.

Other governors have been setting their sights on the state?s businesses, too. The latest was Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, who says the business climate in California comes down to: ?If it doesn?t move, tax it.?

Along the line of governor?s going on big poaching tours, our Business Pulse Survey this week asked: What?s your take on Rick Perry?s visit to California?

Out of 450 votes cast, more than half said his timing is good. At 54 percent, they voted to say that California is driving folks -- people and businesses -- away.

Another 22 percent voted to say Perry is a buffoon, but the message is well taken -- California needs a wakeup call.

Some don?t care about the message. California is not the Lone Star State. Another 22 percent voted for ?Do we want to be Texas? Seriously.?

A final 2 percent voted for other, explain in comments.

The unscientific poll was conducted online by the Sacramento Business Journal between Feb. 13 and Feb. 20.

From the comments:

Comments posted at sacramentobusinessjournal.com about last week?s Business Pulse Survey, which asked: What?s your take on Rick Perry?s visit to California?

?This is missionary work and dangerous for California. Anytime you can get 200 companies to listen to your pitch, you run the risk of losing a percentage of them. With all the bad press about the worst environment to do business in, the last solution California needs is to continue to make it worse, guaranteeing that companies will leave. Raising taxes and adding hurdles is not the way to keep companies here.?

Is this a windows 7 issue?

I recently purchased a new computer. Compared to my old computer, which is about 7 years old (with some newer parts in it), my new computer is screaming fast.

?

However, I have one major issue. Sound and streaming to my second monitor (Which is an LCD Samsung Television).

?

The old computer streamed Hulu and other television websites just fine. This new one has all sorts of issues.

?

Is this something with Windows 7? I've tried a lot to fix it. Updated the firmware on my Samsung TV. Checked to make sure the HDMI cable is attached properly. Changed the resolution on the monitor.

?

Nothing seems to work. When I load windows 7, there is a little music that plays (I don't know what it's called) but it cuts in and out as it's playing, which tells me there is still an issue.

?

Thanks for any help here. Not sure I'm in the correct forum and I apology if I am not, but I'm thinking maybe this is a windows 7 issue?

?

Thanks again.

?
